iPhone 4S - rattle + vibration rattle?

Mine's almost completely stopped rattling of its own accord. Has been well used over the last few days so maybe that's just what it needed.

Mine doesnt rattle at all. I took it out the case, gave it a shake next to my ear and nothing rattles

I set the alert vibration in sounds and held it to my ear and no rattling

Well I compared mine against my girlfriends new iPhone 4s and mine is just comical. It rattles and the vibrate is seriously noisy compared to hers. Going to be visiting the genius bar.

One question- will they swap it out for a brand new one (with proper box) as its only a week old, or try and fob me off with a refurb? And I suppose the other question is... will they actually HAVE any new one's to replace it with?

They won't have any refurbs yet, so you'll get a new phone in a brown box - assuming they have many of them. They'll definately have some for replacements though

Well Apple store Stratford City told me that they had no replacements and so to contact AppleCare.

Applecare are going to do an express replacement (bring me a new one and collect the old one), but they couldn't confirm if they had any stock :o so gotta wait and see if they turn up in 2 days time.

Cleeecooo - I'd definately check it out, mine is definately wrong and sounds like a babies rattle shaking about!

The rattle is normal and not a design fault from the info ive gathered.
It is the AutoFocus lense.

Just Google "iPhone 4S Rattle" and you will see that the Apple Support forum is plagued with threads, aswell as the wider internet.
Many people note that they replacements are exactly the same.

"I jumped from a 3G to a 4GS (amazing speed jump!) and I too have this rattle. It's pretty loud when lightly tapping or putting the phone on a desk. Anyway, after much research, I can confirm mine is the camera autofocus. A good way to test is this:

1) Open the camera app and focus on something in the distance.
2) Tap the back of the phone near the camera - rattles, right?
3) Hold the phone up pretty close to something and let it focus.
4) Tap the phone again - the rattle is gone/quieter?

That's the case for me anyway. I'd be keen to hear other peoples results from doing the above. If yours is different, it seems loose buttons can also cause a rattle.

The rattle doesn't sounds great, but it seems like it's normal. Some people don't have/can't hear the rattle - they're either not as OCD as me, or their autofocus is slightly tighter fitting. I guess it's all to do with manufacturing tolerances.
You can try your luck and try and get a replacement, but seems like it's 50/50 as to whether the phone will rattle. Plus, I'm sure us OCD folk will always find a problem - dead pixels, tinting, loose buttons.
Hope this helps anyway.

PS - I also took mine to the apple store at first, and was told it was the vibrate motor. I'm surprised how many people get told this. Seems that Apple could do the above test and reassure customers. Perhaps the vibrate motor is easier for people to understand. Also hear a lot of "it's the accelerometer/gyro/compass". This is nonsense, as these are solid state (microscopic) devices.

PPS - This also strikes me as something that could be solved by a firmware update. If you have it so the camera autofocus is set to maximum (as if it's focused on something close) while not in use, it wouldn't rattle. I guess it'd use more battery powering the autofocus (peizoelectric) constantly. Might be worth it to avoid thousands of people worrying about their rattling phones. Must cost Apple a fair bit in manpower and phone swaps though.

Can't speak for anyone else, but mine was DEFINATELY 1 billion % a faulty vibration motor that was loose and vibrating around.

The vibration motor is supposed to be glued in place... so watch out!

Mine does it when I tap near the camera, though I'm not really bothered about it. It's not like I'm ever going to be tapping there really on purpose and unless someone told me about it, I doubt I would ever notice.

If for some reason I went and tried to get a refund from the Apple store they might not have any instock anyway. And as nothing is wrong with the phone I don't see the point.

This is normal but the phone doesn't rattle. If you jolt it, it will make a slight click noise, but the vibration motor should not emit any noise at all.

My original 4S did emit a rattle and even worse when vibrated and was horrible. Apple replaced it. The replacement does not make that noise. You decide ;)
