I was thinking about the iPhone 5/6 and what big hardware upgrade can they bring next as the the iphone 4 already:

Has a display that has reached the limits of the human eye.
Knows its location on the Earth.
Knows its location in space.
Has a great camera and HD video.
Has front facing camera.
Good battery life.
As thin as can go without being uncomfortable.

I mean there are things like an 8mp camera, faster network, faster processor, more memory but these are just incremental upgrades. I suppose the iPhone 5 will offer some of these and it will be the iphone 6 that has the big upgrades but what the heck can they be? In built projector?

Holographic screen.. so when you look through it you see it's graphics mapped in real space without being 2D.. Would require the phone to be see through though..

NFC, but that will probably be rolled out to limited success by Nokia and RIM first. 2012/13 seems about right.

Well there is room for improvement on the front camera and you can never have too much battery life.

I agree I think the next one or maybe even two iPhones will be a spec bump (multicore CPU, memory, local storage) rather than anything special. With things like iMovie the phones are doing more of what I call "real computing" so better spec will inevitably help.

I'm finding it difficult to think of what they can add next as well. All I can think of is like what you said, just improving on whats already there...

LTE will be a big upgrade. Going from the current 3.6Mbps mixed circuit/packet switched network to closer to 100Mbps pure IP based network is going to make a lot of new applications possible.

And the next big in CPUs is multi-core. Multi-core should deliver better multitasking and lower power consumption.

Personally though, I'd just like to see better battery life and 128GB of storage. A Xenon flash would be a nice improvement too but that probably require a significantly thicker chassis.

I don't think they'll change the way that iOS multitasks, instead the hardware will support better to make it more efficient.

I'd imagine it'd be fairly simple for Apple to implement this on the iPhone, it's another story whether the networks will upgrade in the next 5 years though....

I want to see an iphone nano alongside standard iphone, same length but thinner and narrower... like the ipod. Can't get on with these massive smartphones with rubbish battery life:)

But a smaller phone will have worse battery life.

Not sure why you're rolling your eyes.

Smaller phone = smaller battery. Smaller battery = lower capacity.

Lower capacity = shorter life.

I appreciate that the screen will be smaller as well but with less space to cram all the electronics in, the battery will be significantly smaller.

Anyway, I really doubt there will be an "iPhone nano" so it's all irrelevant.

Well the same CPU is used, the same memory.. so if the screen is smaller and the battery is smaller.. probably the same battery life..

Unless they use the iPhone 4 screen at 1/2 resolution to be the same resolution as the existing 3GS then most developers aren't going to make things for it.. there's very little that you can do with a really small screen.. development for 4 & pad are already really focusing on those models.

So unless it's a really useless handbag phone that won't do the majority of new apps etc.. then I don't see that being a seller..

No I don't mean just a shrunk down iphone. i.e. it won't be a portable web browser, but will have access to apps (maybe it would be the iphone 3 resolution?), basically less functionality in a compact high quality cheap body for the even more fashion conscious;) I'm sure there are plenty of people who want a non smartphone but there doesn't seem to be much of a market for it. smartphones require big screens, therefore they are big. Which annoys me. I like small things. Anyway, all these reduced functions would mean more battery life.

I personally hope, but know they probably never will, make a separate iPhone all together using cheaper parts such as a plastic back, worse camera, no gyroscope and things like that and then charge about half the price.

TBH, most people buy the iPhone for the iOS only, not the hardware and i think that a lot more people would buy an iphone if it wasn't for the stupid prices which they could keep down using less luxurious components.

This is coming from an iPhone owner.
