It is about profit but it's also about design philosophy. Apple's strategy is simplification; they are never going to introduce the complications which come with installing apps to SD cards. There's a reason why even most high-end Android phones are getting rid of external memory - the proportion of people who care doesn't justify the additional complexity. Most people don't want to worry about whether something is installed to internal or external memory.

I don't buy this.

They wouldn't need to allow apps to be stored on the iPhone. Just pictures/videos/music.

When syncing there would just need to be an option "Would you like your music on your phone or external storage"?

It's about money.

External storage doesn't really bother me as I stream all my music anyway.

Not for Apps, I think that is a bit more complex but for Media it is pretty simple, save all your camera photos too the SD cards. Save media files too the SD card, everyone knows how SD cards/USB thumb drivers work too be honest, its an extremely hard sell I think.

Even if it is design I feel the profit margins, which at this point are crazy given I can get a 256gb SDD for the price of 16gb->32gb on an iOS device these days. I personally wouldn't want to give up that profits, unless there was a huge user revolt.

Also most high end Android devices have SD cards now, HTC One M8, S5, Z2, G3, literally all the high end devices this year have SD card slots.

I really don't expect the breaks to look like that on the final product.

If they do, i'm done*.

*Which I won't be. :p

2014 is the year when sd slots came back. Nearly all the flagships have it now :p

Sony
HTC
Samsung
LG
Oppo

Indeed, SD cards are much more reliable than the phones themselves, no one wants to lose all their photos, videos and messages because their phone stops working. Using external media for storing media is the blindingly obvious design choice. :p

Might not be so much of a problem when iOS 8 arrives with all photos and videos getting stored in iCloud. (If you subscribe that is, as I'm sure most people will use more than the paltry 5GB Apple give you free.)

I have a hunch that this render might be a more realistic guess out of all that have appeared so far (definitely when it comes to the antenna breaks)
