It may take a good few years but Microsoft are dead in the consumer space. They got complacent and took far too long to switch tack when everything went mobile. It reminds me of their massive U-turn in the 90s when Bill Gates suddenly realised that the Internet wasn't just a passing fad but was the future. It's to his credit that he saw what was happening, admitted they'd got it wrong and turned the whole company on a six-pence. The problem is the same has happened with the mobile revolution but, this time, they had the totally clueless Ballmer in charge and he didn't have a clue what to do.

All too little too late for Microsoft now. They'd do better to focus on server stuff like Windows Server, Exchange, SQL Server etc and cloud services like Azure. Remember when people referred to the "Wintel" monopoly? Those days are long gone, the consumer space belongs to Apple and Google now.

Hmm! as I remember it Apple were in a very similar position not that long ago, in fact a much worse position - days away from going bust. Now then, how did that turn out?

Microsoft have dropped some right clangers - however, I do expect a robust turnaround, in fact it's already happening. Perhaps you could give them a call as it appears you have all the facts at your fingertips?

I had to cut mine. I went to a 3 store the guy said I couldn't transfer my number to a nano sim and that he'd have to cut it.

Ended up doing it myself. Bought a 99p adapter on ebay so it can be used in micro sim phones too.

Decided to wait a couple of weeks before I get mine.

Going to go into my local Carphone Warehouse a week on Saturday and see what they can offer me. Mind has been made up on a iPhone 6, space grey. Just not sure about how much storage I need. I use Spotify to stream music, but take a lot of pics too. Have taken around 2000 in 2 years on my S3.

64GB?

Also, a question about data usage. I currently have 1GB on my S3 and don't really get anywhere near it. Does 4G use a lot more data just 'idling'? Will 5GB be enough, or should I pay a bit more and take the 20GB?

The two situations aren't comparable at all. Microsoft have to fight on many more fronts than Apple did in 1997, and unless they can effectively create an industry all by themselves (iPod, iTunes etc) which doesn't suffer from being tarnished by the Microsoft name I can't see how they can do anything else in the consumer space other than survive.

All the noises coming from Satya point to them giving up on Xbox, it's already been unbundled from Kinect less than a year after launch, and nobody has committed to not spinning it off. Meanwhile they want to buy the Minecraft guys for $2.5bn. Nothing that they are doing points towards a coherent strategy.

I actually cannot physically walk into an apple store....I have to much self respect :p

So I'm waiting a few weeks for the 64gb version to be in stock

You're incapable of responding to anything without some sarcastic remark aren't you? :rolleyes: I merely stated my opinion, which is that Microsoft is currently a debacle. I don't know how they should go about fixing it, if they even can, but that doesn't mean I'm not entitled to my opinion.

The Z3 compact the Samsung Alpha and hopefully the Nexus replacement are top of my list presently. I don't really want iOS on a phone or want to be seen about with one, just so pretentious and well 'bungalow'. I'm just hoping and praying my employers don't saddle me with one when they do their annual swop out later this year.

No 4g doesn't use more data than 3G. However by having a 4g connection you will use more data as you can download faster meaning you'd probably use it more. Ie no more waiting 5 minutes to buffer on a poor connection you'd have watched the video already and moved into the next. If that makes sense?

You mistake opinion for making any attempt at objectivity whatsoever - you pick up a snippet here a snippet there put two and two together and make five.

Have you read the last shareholders report, are you a business analyst. If so then I stand corrected. If not then my first paragraph stands.

Why did you not mention Xbox?

We don't really get to hear strategy, business analyst do as do city investors. I have had MS and Apple stock for years and years and I can tell you there's not a great deal in those reports. Actually that is not strictly true, there is but they do give you headache trying to understand them.
 
Went down to a mobile phone shop and had a look at the Samsung Note 3 (similar size to the iPhone 6+) and it really wasn't as big as I thought it was. Makes me feel better about reserving the iPhone 6+ because was worried it was going to be way too big.
