If OP has damaged the home button too all functionality will be lost including pressing it not just Touch ID.

Yes, the home button is damaged too.

So, even if I buy a home button from Amazon for his iphone7 the button will not function, is this correct?

Correct. You can't replace a Home Button yourself from the iPhone 7 onwards.

I get the losing TouchID thing when replacing it but losing all functionality? How ridiculous!

This is a growing concern within the repairs departments. With the latest phones Apple is blocking been able to repair them very quickly by making parts integrated and hardware ID tagged matching that it's impossible for anyone else to repair them without the hardware ID bonding machine. Only Apple have this facility.
