The price will probably depend on whether the Lightning port will remain all-digital or if they'll combine it like the analog headphone/digital optical toslink connection on the Macs. If the former then the cable will need to have a a DAC/amp inside (like an even tinier Audioquest Dragonfly) to convert the digital signal to analog and amp it for your earphones, and you'd expect to get hit for that, if the latter then it'll be the same sort of thing as the 1/4" to 3.5mm adapters people use to plug their full size headphones into 3.5mm ports, which even with an Apple Tax shouldn't be absurdly priced.

The adapter will be like £19, and Apple will encourage you to use Bluetooth headphones.

It's not ideal and hopefully they can give a decent reason for doing it other than Apple just being Apple.

It is just another bloody stupid idea, like removing the ports from the new Macbook.

Apple has really started making lots of ridiculous stupid decisions since Jobs passed away, I used to be a fan, but now they are just making money from the moronic sheep who think that the only device that does what they want has an Apple logo on it...

I agree with this.

I still think Apple makes good hardware and software, very good in fact. I just am not convinced that it is any better than others anymore, though.

since Jobs... lol.

I guess you're quick to forget the original iPhone that didnt record video send MMS which at the time was quite a big deal.

The hardware capability was there if you jailbroke it, that was just a strange OS decision... Bit baffling.

Good point though! But they have certainly made more weird decisions since then.

ipod is thinner

If apple even suggest they're dropping 3.5mm to make the phone thinner then their lying scumbags, the new ipod touch is much thinner and still use the 3.5mm jack.

That's how I see it - they won't stop you using headphones, because so many people still use wired it's going to take a while for the transition to take place, even in the general consumer space. I can't see it being a big adapter or connector at least.

When will Apple go USB-C. I thought by EU law they have to by 2017?

They already have a Lightning to USB cable so I'd assume they'll have a Lightning to USB-C.

As people have said, the camera module is a limiting factor for thinness far more than the 3.5mm jack, and it's removal has far more to do with pushing bluetooth audio and Apple's historic drive to reduce the number of ports on devices either by elminating (what they consider to be) legacy ones earlier than other companies or condensing ports down by making universal ones that use adapters; the Macbook being the obvious recent example.

I really, really hope this doesn't happen. And no, i don't want to use an adaptor.

I remember when you were forced to buy sony headphones for their mobiles due to their bespoke connectors. It's just naked profiteering.

There's enough rumours to give it weight now, and bluetooth audio becoming the 'normal' way to listen to music on the go seems to be where we're headed; nearly every company is offering a wire-free model or range now and it won't be a surprise when other companies start pushing it for their devices too. Don't forget the 3.5mm jack exists as a replacement for the 6.35mm jack that came before it - it's inevitable that this too will become obsolete at some point.
