New iPhone 8gb gained via contract from o2 brand new in aug
Windows Vista software used to update via iTunes

What do you mean?

Put the phone in DFU mode (Google for instructions) and then iTunes will ask if you want to restore it to factory settings. Yes. Upgrade to 2.2.1 and then restore your iPhone backup from iTunes.

Caveat Emptor though as I haven't done that myself and you could lose your data.
