iPhone - any ideas when?

Now seeing the rumors that Orange has it in the bag... :p Only going to get worse, we know tat it will not be over here till atleast November, but would be nice to know with who.

Please don't let Orange or O2 get it.Vodafone please get it. Orange has to be the worst network I ever used, worst at getting signal.I can't get signal when I'm outside of my house! O2 aren't as bad but reception is still not as good as Vodafone.

I hope whoever gets it comes up with a decent tarrif / data package, and they also announce it with enough time for people to migrate their numbers, as much as I suppose I would like an iPhone my phone number is worth far more to me than the handset.

At present nobody apart from T-Mobile offers a decent "unlimited" usage data package for a resonable price.

Although I certinaly wouldnt be buying an iPhone if its going to mean signing a 24 month contract and paying £300 or so for the handset when I could get the latest nokia/se/samsung phone probably for free and on a 12 month plan...

Apple's best play for the UK may be simply to just release the handset as a sim-free device, especailly as its not 3G/HSDPA enabled.

I think I will only buy it if it is released on pay as you go, although if they have some good deals on contract then I may consider (providing it is either o2 or Vodaphone)

Hopefully it is released around Christmas. Would make a nice present :)

You could just buy it contract and cancel the contract in the first 30 days.

That way, you don't pay anything and you're free to put your own SIM in (providing it's the same carrier) :)

That's what a few people did in the US.

That sounds like a good idea, I never knew you could do that (haven't ever had a contract phone) Though I suppose it's like most things with a contract, you get a cooling off period.

Would they not ask for the phone back though?

Anyway, lets just say that in q4, o2's data tarriffs WILL be changing :D
I'd rather O2 get it than Orange, who would be my last choice. Won't be enough to make me leave T-Mobile though.

Your right however with the iPhone you are actually buying the Phone then activating it with a SIM its not like you get the phone free. People have done this in the US.

That was the method of selling them in the US anyway :)

Overhere people are so used to getting their phones for free or a very subsidised price if they sign up to a contract that I dont really see it working over here.

Take the N95 for example, it has a list price of about £400, however on the majority of contracts costing between £30-50 a month its often subsidised down to under £100, and on most around the £45+ mark its normally given away free.

I suppose in the ideal world Apple would just sell the phones "sim-free" themselves and charge people £350 for the handset and let them sort out their own contract/payg sim etc.

My money is on T-mobile. I have a friend that works for T-mobile (network project techie, not some call centre lackey) and they are currently rapidly deploying EDGE across the network even though they have extensive 3G coverage already...

Hmmm :D

There's a few that use EDGE - my Sony Ericsson W810 for example. They usually drop back to standard GPRS, but it's slow enough that Web'n'Walk won't work very well. Makes me wonder how long it will be till we get a 3G iPhone?

I'm sticking with 02 as my bet.. we really outta get a poll going! (mods ;);)) :D

It would be nice if Apple sold it totally sim-free, and then let you use your own sim, but they've dug themselves so deep with AT&T in the US (over getting a percentage of the sales / revenue) that I can't see it happening.

I wish Apple would announce a ship date, it's really disheartening not knowing anything at all.

Should be hsdpa, nevermind 3g in this day and age.

Apple are an American company and their primary market is the US. We should just be thankful they've gone for a GSM solution rather than regional alternatives. Last time I was there about 12 months ago, no one knew what 3G was (as I waved my N70 at them!) , and the locals were all going nuts for new Bluetooth phones and headsets. The US phone market is at least 5 years behind the UK/Europe in terms of technology. It took the upstarts of Cingular (now rebranded AT&T) and T-mobile to shake the industry up.
