One of my friends recently went to the Genius Bar in Birmingham to get his iPhone 3G looked at, as it's got the crack near the dock at the bottom. I gathered from a few people that they replace it as a known fault, even if the phone is out of warranty, but my friend got charged 140 quid to fix it! Has he been fobbed off by the genius bar?

Why was he charged? It's a common fault and they should replace the phone for free.
Even if he paid £140, he should have been given a new phone.
