I’m on contract with O2 (on the £35 iPhone 3G contract but it’s now in my iPhone 3GS) and all the fancy iPhone stuff is great.... if only the phone stuff worked

I’m getting lots of people ask me “Why’d you have your phone off, I rung you 3 times and it went straight to voicemail”... but my iPhone was on, in signal, and didn’t ring at all :(, then (for example yesterday) when they rung for the fourth time did the iPhone finally ring.
It will then take a couple of hours before it receives the new voicemail.
Texts are being rubbish too, some that I receive were sent five hours ago.

Whatever’s wrong it’s go to the O2 shop I guess.... but ideas on whether it’s SIM related or handset related?

I had this problem for the first time recently. My sister tried calling but although my iPhone was switched on with full signal, she was getting my answer phone instead. She also sent texts that didn't come through. I eventually managed to get the device to retrieve the missing texts when I initiated a call to someone else.

to be fair i don't think its limited to iphone/o2 had similar problems before, eventually receiving notifications up to a month after the occurance.

What software version are you on? I got my jailbroken iPhone on 3.1 software and it doesnt do this to me. But on 3.0 software I did get this problem.

I have this problem, sometimes i dont get texts until hours later. Try taking out your sim and give it a good wipe. It seemed to reduce the freequency for me. I need a new sim im just too lazy to go to an O2 shop to get one.

Sounds like a network problem.

Friends of mine had the same issues on 3 and orange, lets hope O2 aren't going to end up the same.

As an example of this, I just (15:39) got a SMS from O2Uk telling me about the VAT increase, which I guess everyone will be getting. The message was sent at 14:43, yet I've just recived it. 4 bars out of 5 on EDGE here at work.

I've not got that text yet - I imagine that text will be going out to all consumer users, and as such probably has staggered delivery times (but will still report the initial 14:43 time). I don't know enough about these things to be sure though.

I get exactly the same problems at work (in Guildford). Turning off 3G seems to fix the issue, but then what's the point in having the 3GS if I can't use 3G?

This problem has been happening to me both at work (no 3G signal, EDGE only :() and in town and at home where there is 3G coverage.

Reinstall of the firmware won't fix this. It's been a well known issue with iPhones from the very first model. I'd put it down to the network but no one has really come up with a solid explanation afaik.

I run a jb'd 3G and have never had it in the past...until last month when o2 were being flaky reception wise. One day whilst at home the phone lit up with a voicemail messagebox on the screen - prior to that there was no ringing at all. I've had a few since then too.

had this problem on my works iPhone for ages now, it is very anoying and have yet to be able to resolve the issue.

Had an ask around some iPhone users at work today and some (but not all) have been having the calls going straight to voicemail issue too, but I'm the only one with the slow texts issue.

Anyone got this fixed?, as tbh it's not really acceptable.

Am I being a bit hot-headed, but paying £35 p/m for a contract you'd hope O2 could get the voice & data networks working fine? Granted iPod & Apps issues is Apples problem not O2s, but the voice & data networks?

Staff at work have started complaining about this problem.

Good job we've had another load of Blackberrys arrive this week for the guys at work then ;).

My missus had problems with texts taking ages to send and receive.

She called O2 and they advised taking the SIM out and putting it back in, which seemed to do the trick.

I've had this a few times in the past year on my iPhone, but for 6 months before that whilst I had an Orange phone it happened all the time. Probably missed about 10% of texts in that period and 50% were delivering/being delivered late :/

Its a limitation of the iPhones, one i think has been introduced with the 3.x firmwares.
It cant send/recieve sms/calls at the same time its access the cellular data (2g/3g) network.
I get it all the time at work.

I had this problem myself and did a bit of digging around on the Apple forums. Removed the eBay app I had installed as suggested by one member and the problem has been solved.

Strange.
My mate with his 3GS doesnt have the ebay app and it happens for him...?
I havnt removed it myself. I never notice when i have the problem.
lol.
