Indeed, they really do hold their money well. The extra money you pay upfront / over the length of the contract compared to other smart phones can pretty much be written off by resale value :)

Look at it now, it's got strong competition from Android so in 18months do you still think an iPhone 4 will command a high price when Android devices have cooler features and are cheaper brand new?

I certainly do not.

Look at any apple product, they all seem to hold their value loads. Remember that the bulk of the market buy a phone because its a phone, not because its got android on it :p
 
But the past 6 months I've seen fewer and fewer people I know talking about iPhone upgrades and instead shifting to Android. heck only 1 uncle I know has an iPhone and that's a 3GS now, everyone else has an Android phone sporting 2.1 or above.

I'm slowly turning him green though. He's been impressed with my phone recently :p
 
Personally Oxy I'd buy an iPhone or you will not be happy, it already seems that you are not overly impressed with Android 2.x and it isn't perfect, far from it.

The difference being that if you get a good phone hardware wise you will probably be able to upgrade to Android 3.0 when it comes out at some point next year, but that still means having to live with it until then.

I'd also say that an iPhone will hold it's value better but the life cycle is predictable down to a T, new phone every year around June/July, but with contracts now running 24 months there are less and less second hand phones going to be available, thus keeping the price high, sort of makes sense.

I personally don't ever see myself moving to iOS from Android at least not for a phone, I like the flexibility it can offer me if I want it, and the I like the fact I don't have to pay insane contract prices to get a good handset.
 
I've only ever used the google phone and galaxy. The galaxy is a good phone but after a brief play with one I found a few issues that would put me off. My father in law also has one and he moans that the software you get with the phone to connect it up to you PC crashed all the time. Something to do with a 16 character max files name size.

Simply put people pay a premium for iPhones because they work brilliantly. I resisted getting one until the 3GS came out because I was so anti apple anything. In the end I had to concede that it's was streets ahead of anything else on the market and is still the best phone available despite other companies bending over backwards to close the gap.

Buy an iPhone, it's worth every penny and more. If you're really worried about the cost buy a second hand 3GS and get PAYG. It's still better than anything except the iPhone 4.

Been down to as little at £76 for a San Francisco it would appear, with the voucher code for Orange's website and the cash back too.

I've seen the opposite myself, heck I know 3 people in the last week that have bought iPhone 4s (one ex-desire user).

It's a great phone and is going from strength to strength... (both iOS and the hardware) I can't see it losing popularity any time soon.
 
What's the TCO of an iPhone 4 (16GB) at the moment? I'd be interested to see how much extra people try to justify paying for the iPhone, some of which as stated would be able to be recouped assuming it's not been bashed around like a dodgem.

I pay £20pm for my phone it's a normal Desire that I've had since April and the handset was free, so my TCO is £360 for 18 months, and I think the phone will be worth about £50 by then.

I've taken the rough 2nd hand price of the iPhone 4 at the current time to be around £450.

If you buy it with Tesco:

£349 up front cost
£20 for 12 months = £240 quid
Total cost over 12 months £589

TCO would be £139 for 12 months (including resale value)

---------------------------------

If you buy it with Vodafone

£219 up front cost (to try and get close to the £20pm)
£25 for 24 months = 600
Total cost over 24 months £819

TCO would be £369 for 24 months (or £184.50 for 12 months, including resale value)

Your assumptions are flawed. If you are selling it in 12/24 months you can't sell it for the value today. You need to look somewhere closer to the value of an iphone 3g or 3gs

Of course, I did say "current price"- I'm well aware of this.

Point taken though, add £100/150 to the final price :)
