weird. before i updated to 3.1 i had 400mb or so space free on my iPhone. after, i know how 346mb in 'Other' and i would rather like it back. anybody have any ideas on what it is, and how i can get rid of it?

I'd seen it too and just assumed it was little things being added but then...surely that wouldn't go under "other" or anything.

Quick question (slightly related), I recently got a refurbished iPhone 3G and have noticed the capacity iTunes lists isn't 16GB but 14.4GB...I can't say I ever noticed what the capacity was on my original one so what could be going on here?

The other capacity can consist of iPhone settings, email messages, SMS messages, Safari cache/history/cookies, calendar events, contact information, phone favorites, recent calls, notes, etc.

That's just the usable formatted size, it's always smaller than what it's advertised as. So a 500GB HDD is really 465GB etc. A good way to work it out is to multiply the advertised size by .925 and that will give you the usable amount.

On the 8GB iPhone it is 7.1GB, this is to do with the iPhone OS which takes up around 500MB and the way disk space formatting is worked out. It is advertised using a Base10 counting system and in binary on the phone where each Mb is 1024Kb. So you end up with less space then advertised.
