Iphone price has dropped!

They have sold 1 million of them, doubt its due to problems selling :)

What else could it possible be exactly? Sony have done the exact same thing to the ps3, it's sold a lot more than the iphone but that doesn't mean it's selling well compared to what they expected.

They had to have a higher price due to the existence of the 4GB, which they didn't want to price too cheeply, but still needed a gap in pricing between the two models. Now that it doesn't exist anymore this reason no longer exists.

And why would they get rid of it if it was meeting their sales expectations? In a business you would never put the price of a product like the iphone down unless you werent meeting sales targets. There really isn't any other product designed for the same type of customer so there's no competition issues that would require them to do this.

Most people who own Macs, own an ipod, nano and shuffle, their hardly going to miss out on another shiny object ^_^. well atleast 2 of my freinds feel that way.

To push more people into buying the 8gb one which probably has more profit margin. Most people were probably getting the 8gb one anyway so they will have most likely thought removing the 4gb makes for less confusion (having to explain why to get one over the other), a generally higher spend per customer and increases in profits through greater efficiency as they dont have to fafth around with two SKUs.

What's stopping Apple releasing a 16GB iPhone now then?

According to sources the iPod Touch uses the same binaries for the apps, so it would only be a case of producing a larger capacity model.

Unless they "wimp out" and decide 8GB is enough.

Well, I see the drop in price as a stock clearing exercise - eg iphone 2 is coming, most likely 3g - to coincide with the European launch. I am assuming in 2 iterations 16gb and 8gb since they repeatedly say the iphone is the top of the line ipod.

Well they've offered early adopters a $100 voucher to use on any Apple product.

To all iPhone customers:

I have received hundreds of emails from iPhone customers who are upset about Apple dropping the price of iPhone by $200 two months after it went on sale. After reading every one of these emails, I have some observations and conclusions.

First, I am sure that we are making the correct decision to lower the price of the 8GB iPhone from $599 to $399, and that now is the right time to do it. iPhone is a breakthrough product, and we have the chance to 'go for it' this holiday season. iPhone is so far ahead of the competition, and now it will be affordable by even more customers. It benefits both Apple and every iPhone user to get as many new customers as possible in the iPhone 'tent'. We strongly believe the $399 price will help us do just that this holiday season.

Second, being in technology for 30+ years I can attest to the fact that the technology road is bumpy. There is always change and improvement, and there is always someone who bought a product before a particular cutoff date and misses the new price or the new operating system or the new whatever. This is life in the technology lane. If you always wait for the next price cut or to buy the new improved model, you'll never buy any technology product because there is always something better and less expensive on the horizon. The good news is that if you buy products from companies that support them well, like Apple tries to do, you will receive years of useful and satisfying service from them even as newer models are introduced.

Third, even though we are making the right decision to lower the price of iPhone, and even though the technology road is bumpy, we need to do a better job taking care of our early iPhone customers as we aggressively go after new ones with a lower price. Our early customers trusted us, and we must live up to that trust with our actions in moments like these.

Therefore, we have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. Details are still being worked out and will be posted on Apple's website next week. Stay tuned.

We want to do the right thing for our valued iPhone customers. We apologize for disappointing some of you, and we are doing our best to live up to your high expectations of Apple.

Steve Jobs
Apple CEO

Nice to see they get something in return, but there's still going to be a lot of people p'd if they bring out a 16GB version this year.

As for 3G.. don't even go there ;)

Well Apple have said an iphone will launch in Europe in Q4.. Macword is on on the 25th Sept in Europe - 3G iphone could be knocking at the door, as could a 16gb version - that would make sense of the $200 drop in price..;)

I can't see the 3G happening, but I have been wrong before :o

(Too much of a revision in the first 6 months?)

I'm hoping they'll at least announce a launch date at MacWorld, better if they do launch then though!

It would be nice if people started porting Mail (and all the other apps) to the iPod Touch :D

I doubt they would announce a 3G date before releasing the iphone in Europe - then no one would buy the existing iphone! They have commited to Q4 release in Europe after all. So either it will be a 3G European announcement or a standard iphone Europe announcement - lets hope its the former!

Just had a thought, maybe the iphone has been bumped up to 16gb to compensate for lack of 3G in Europe? That would also make sense - I hope this isnt the case!

3G drains the battery like crazy.. I couldn't care if they included it or not :p

Give me the iPhone.. any iPhone and I'll be happy! haha

Hardly, if you want people to ever buy from you again you have to do it. $100 that has to be spent on apple products (can you even buy anything apple for that little? :p) isn't that good compared to the full cash difference that microsoft gave it's xbox customers.
