been wondering about some things with buying an iphone from o2 and then immediately unlocking it for use with a normal any network SIM card.

1) when you buy the iphone from the o2 shop, do you have to sign up for the contact there and then? or do you just buy the iphone and walk out of the shop without signing anything about a contract?

2) when you took the iphone home, would you be immediately be able to unlock it to any network and avoid the £35 18 month contract? therefore never paying for the contract?

3) if i unlock the iphone and something goes wrong (hardware/software) can i just flash it with the official iphone software and seek help from o2?

sorry if the answers to any of these questions were in other threads. i looked but i saw no obvious answers

thanks for any help. I've been looking into buying an iphone and these things have just got me worried :)

1) No you don't have to sign anything you just buy the phone.

2) Yes you can unlock it without paying for the contract

3) You might have problems taking it for repair as you have not signed up for the contract

You will loose your warranty if you unlock it. It's rare for one to go wrong though.

Have a read of the iPhone sticky up the top ^^

woah quick response thanks!

great news, gotta get one of these soon then!

any help on the last question though?

I would think that o2 and CPW would do checks against the iPhone's Serial/iMEI and when they see you have not signed up for the contract they would most likely refuse to honor the warranty.

It's a risk most people are willing to take so that they can get an iPhone without having to pay for the iPhone contract :)
