The only benefit is that you are putting it back to the way it was. There were some reports of people being unable to return phones due to the bootloader being incorrect.

If you took it back to a store though I can't imagine the average doofus in CPW or O2 even knowing what a bootloader was though, nevermind knowing how to check :)

Just for the record, mine was also 1.1.2, bought last week, pwnaged and up and running in a few mins :) It's so quick if I bought another I'd be tempted to take my laptop with me and pwn it in the shop there and then ;)

Just sold mine for 250 quid to a guy in town :)
 
Why does the bootloader even need downgrading in the first place?

Because the new bootloader was harder to hack, so ziphone downgrades to the easier one and hacks it. New tools like pwnage can hack the latest ones without downgrading but the Windows version is a bit naff.
