We all know it's a no no without doing naughty things to the phone.
I'm wondering why though. It seems it's something that a lot of end users are crying out for, but there must be a reason why Apple haven't introduced the ability to change the text tones to something custom.

We can do ringtones (within reason of course), why not SMS? I did try googling, but came upon millions of sites which told me to JB my phone....

A lot of samsung phones are the same. It makes no sense. Maybe it's a marketing ploy to corner everyone into using the same 1 or 2 message tones so that people become accustomed to the sound and people with different phones feel left out. The Nokia 'beep beep, beep beep' is still synonymous with many things.

It's just their control. They don't like people ruining the image of their products. I doubt they want south park ringtones coming from their phones. It's why we only got backgrounds now I doubt they want half the retarded backgrounds people will use.

Why allow custom ring-tones but not SMS tones then?

I'm sure if they had their way they wouldn't allow them neither. But they have to buckle on certain things right? And it's a way for them to make money by buying ringtones. Although you can do them yourself but the average user will not know how todo them or bother to learn.

Then why cant apple add more themselves as an update from time to time, Most of the SMS tones on the iphone are **** and boring :(

This.

Hell if they did a selection of customs ones where you had to pay for them I'd probably buy a couple at 50p each or something, extra few £million for them right there.

Custom SMS tones are for chavs.

I don't know, I could just see that kind of snobbery being the culprit from a company like Apple :p
