Hello!

I'm looking for an iPod headunit for my 205 GTI - ideally I'd like one of the ones where you can control the iPod from the headunit directly. However, it seems most of them run a cable into a glovebox or something, allowing you to hide your ipod whilst it's connected up. Is that right? What's the best one to get?

Has anybody invented one that you can slot your ipod into the front of?

edit: I have a current gen 80GB Classic.

Yes, thats correct, they connect via a cable, but you still have control over the iPod from your head unit, and they usually charge your iPod up at the same time. The degrees of control and information displayed on the head unit depends on which head unit you buy.

Not that I know of and I very much doubt it. You need to use a cable, but you do have a choice of a rear cable, which is good for if you want to put your iPod in the glove box and keep the cable out of sight as well, or front for if you want to just put the iPod on your passenger seat or in a cubby hole somewhere.

There are probably over a hundred head units out there that have some level of iPod integration, so its a bit hard to recommend any without know if you want a front or rear cable, if you have any brand preferences and how much you want to spend.

I would suggest having a browse around some car audio sites. Most people on here love Pioneer and will tell you to buy one, but Alpine are equally as good as a premium brand, and some of the medium brands like JVC, Kenwood and Panasonic are worth considering due to the value they offer.

One thing to bear in mind when looking is that most head units that say they are iPod compatible still require a separate adaptor or cable. These can vary in price quite a lot.

Thanks, man. Ideally I'd like a rear cable thing so I can hide it in my glovebox. Looking to spend £200, but I'm open to spending a bit more for a cool bit of kit.

Another thing to take into account is whether or not it ill support your ipod. I have the Pioneer DEH-P4000UB which says in the manual that it supports up to 5th gen ipods. It may well support the Classic but i have yet to try it.

I would suggest maybe looking at the Alpine X series, like the X100. These are specifically designed for iPod integration, although the downside is that they don't play CDs.

Best ipod h/u for 200 quid imo

I've just bought the Pioneer DEH-P700BT and it's absolutely fantastic.
My criteria for a head unit was pretty much the same as yours - £200 budget, iPod connectivity, CD player, stylish looks.

The P700 also has bluetooth connectivity and comes with a microphone so that you can use your phone hands free. It works seamlessly and you can even make calls and see missed and received calls from the head unit (which also stores your contacts!).

If you're interested then I'll happily take some photos of it and do a video to show you the functions.

Cracking head unit for the £199 price tag.
