Hi

i believe UK ipods have limited volume and tbh when walking to work / cycling travelling on planes etc i cant hear nothing on it.

should i buy a headphone amp (what should i pay for one? any recommendations etc) or my friend is going to USA in a few weeks should i get an American one? its still about 175 quid in america.

what would you do?

As above... unless your tracks are all normalised at a really low volume?? Although I dont think that the user can set this?

Normalising tracks can be a good thing, when done right.

Batch editing your entire library would be crazy. Some tracks would just sound hideous because of the background noise, and the music would loose a lot of the dynamics.

If you can get a cheap iPod Classic in the USA, get one. The EU volume limit is shocking, even if it's intended to protect hearing.

Whoa, that felt weird.. considering my job involves telling people off for not wearing ear protection! ha!

yeah ive done that but maybe im wrong it just seems that the volume is the same but now the volume doesnt change much on the *fixed* tracks from when i go through half volume.

yes volume is max also, its fine normally in the office etc but when theres background noise i can barely hear.

i guess i was looking at headphone amps but not knowing much about them and the internet not really saying much i was wondering if anybody has experience with them and if there worth it or if i need to spend a lot of money to buy one which is worth it

HASWA sucks bum! As do CDM regs - I'm sure they'll be changed again!!

I agree - normalisation is wicked - i just meant if the op had set a low level across the board!

I dont know anything about headphone amplifiers - so cant really help - but I would suggest that if its an issue thats recently reared its head maybe the ipod/headphones are dodgy... tried another set?? :)

Blasphemy!!

Don't forget Normalising only brings/makes the peaks of the sound waves 0dB, so it could be that the highest wave is that of a cymbal/bang and the rest of the audio was untouched / brought up by 1dB

I take it your using the headphones that came with the ipod OP? If so then thats crazy. I got mild tinnitus using the Apple supplied headphones is noisey areas, they should come with a health warning. You end up bumping up the volume more and more to drown out the background noise.

Get some in-ear headphones or some closed back headphones and the background noise won't be a problem.

Ive recently bought some Audio Technica EM9D and was surprised how loud they were, I was originally planning on buying a headphone amp, but with these headphones i dont think its required.

I use my iPod at work (noisy engineering factory) and i rarely have the volume at 100%, unless a good track comes on... :p

All iPods should come with a note saying, buy Sennheiser CX300's, 400s or 500s because they sound better, insulate the environment sounds and don't force every one else to listen to your crappy drum and base music.

i've got a proggy that ups the volume to whatever levels you like...email in trust, drop me a note and i'll try get it across to you tomorrow night champ

i was under the impression this didnt work on the newer classics?

im not using apple headphones got some semi expensive (£30)sony ones i use with the rubber ear pod things, but they are coming to the end of the lifespan so i might have a look into some other headsets.
