iPod Classic - will it be updated ever?

Having waited 5yrs (or actually more?) since buying the original 60GB iPod video it's now on it's last legs. The screen had been messed up for a while, but it's now got some sort of weird scroll wheel problem and the battery life is pants.

I hate the iPod touch (I have an iPhone so no need for the same thing again) and want the big storage of the classic.

My question is, it hasn't been updated for absolutely ages - is there any chance there's something new on the horizon i.e. before Christmas?

if not, I'll pick one up in duty free on my way home from Africa as I really want a working iPod!

Cheers for any advice.

I have no info, but I would buy now, I really wouldn't be surprised if it got dropped at next refresh. What's really needed though is something crazy like 1TB of space, and video out to TV.

yes, but read it:

* Despite being due for an update, Apple did not refresh the iPod classic alongside the rest of its iPod line at its September 1st, 2010 media event. Consequently, the fate of the iPod classic is in question, and it is unknown if or when it will receive another update.

Yep I read it, though I posted before I put my thoughts.

I think there not going to make another and are going to work on something with a even bigger capacity. But I'm also thinking they will ditch it.

50/50 IMO.

I would buy now

Seems like Apple are concentrating on their Touch range even though there isn't much memory on them. Which is why i prefer the Classic line. I'd get the 160gb before it gets discontinued which i'm sure it will at the next refresh.

I said this a year (or more) ago.

The appendage "classic" tells me it's the last proper iPod with a hard drive. I wouldn't be surprised if it was dropped when the availability of large flash chips is commonplace.

I think the same. They keep it around purely because some people need that capacity. They have to offer something to that part of the market - as soon as they have a viable alternative to mechanical hard drives at that size, they'll switch to it.

and then it will cost an arm and a leg :p

I can't really see what there is to update about the classic anymore other than adding more size to it.

They've kept it going, but I can't imagine it's a very big seller these days.

I'd buy now if I were you. I've got a two year old 120Gb Classic which has about 500Mb free on it so I'm going to end up buying a new one in the next couple of months. I won't hesitate to get another one.

I'd just go for it, I have had an 80gb since 2008 and it's still going strong. Very strong in fact, it's never missed a beat yet!

Personally I'd try to pick up a 160gb second hand and make it last as long as you can.

Might be worth checking if electrical stores have discounted ex-display models for sale.

When the newer 160gb classic came out, I got an ex-display classic 120gb for £20 from the indian cuisine electrical retailer! It was literally just the device and no box, cables etc but I luckily had spares.

I would say once they update the iPod Touches to 128GB of flash memory, then the Classic will die a death. Platter drives are out-dated and hardly anyone is using them any more. Moving parts, can get stuck, can have a short lifespan e.t.c.

Old Classics are still fairly available, they pop up on that auction site all the time, and if you go for a 5th or 5.5G model, you can upgrade the HDD to up to 240GB and put a bigger battery in (search for something like Apricorn, I forget the spelling), or swap the HDD out for flash memory, and 128GB ones are available to buy separately.
