**apologies this is in the hard-drive thread too**
Iv just experienced ultimate sods law.
Completed all my uni work, home pc is generally to unreliable to do work on so didnt use it, due to it becoming increasingly unstable lately. Did all the work at uni, oh but we only get 50mb of storage space(...), as a multimedia student when im making an application that involves a lot of pictures, morphing sequences saved as AVIs, aswell as accompanying soundtrack etc this obviously needs to be stored elsewhere, I lost my USB stick so was using my ipod nano, finished all the work, unplugged from one pc, plugged into another, ready to present it for preliminary marking(final hand in is in under 24hours, but iv been given an extra week due to the circumstances) and it wiped itself.

Any ideas for getting the thing back, data recovery etc? Free programs etc?
It wiped all my music etc and went back to default settings.
Please help me :x im drowning my sorrows right now. It took me soo long.

First try - Show Hidden Files in windows explorer!

I really feel for you man! I don't need to tell you about backups and backups.
There is nothing I really trust to do this - though this might work. However it has no testimonials - but it is on version tracker!

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/win/66974

Or download.com

http://www.download.com/Undelete/3000-2094_4-10250457.html

If you can see it in DOS then

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_DOS_commands#undelete

is the old standby.

However I would not touch it and send it to a professional. I am unfamiliar with a trusted group in the UK.

ay i know about backups, but not enough room on uni drives and usually my backups are on home pc, but its playing up and i avoided using it for my work, i usually do it on it and have multiple backups, but its been playing up lately so i did everything @ uni!

if i right clikc the drive its showing as only having about 2mb used, everything was wiped, but its not been formatted or anything so in theory i should be able 2 restore the data. Im just no expert on this and wanted advice.

If anyones an expert using dark basic pro ill gladly use your expertise to redo the work though :D

easy recovery and other programmes are around that can be used. Unlikely to find any free ones though. It's FAT32 so you could use undelete but you wouldn't be able to see it in dos as it's usb.

The data will still be there, just don't put anything else on it ;)

Silly question i'm sure but why didn't you have a copy on your pc as well as your ipod?

Good luck

Strangely my ipod started saying it needed to be recovered today, i just changed the drive letter and it started working fine

im a student, any suggestions for cheap programs? yea i know not to put a thing on it, i know majority of time data can be retrieved aslong as sectors aint overwritten.

Didnt have backups on my machine since it constantly turns off etc, Id attempted to start the work on it but things quickly became corrupt, or it crashed at important moments, and at uni we only have 50mbs of space, and one of the raw image edits was over 50mb alone, add all the other raws with that, there edits, clipped down versions, lower res versions, morphing avis, sound files, compiled video files, and then the final application.

Aswell as all my other modules work :)

Even in Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Disk Management?

It might just be the MBR... have you tried CHKDSK? No wait you can't see it ... sigh.

i cant see the ipod in my computer, just when i went to format recover on easy recover it wouldnt let me select the ipod. Raw recover did though - but my pc is restarting part way through recovery process, its a little nackered. My new gear started arriving today though, and ll use flatmates pc once his gf clears off

phone apple, tell them to sort it or you will take there a.s.s to court and milk them dry

a new ipod wont cut it hear, watchdog, anything to get them to recover your data by pros for free

and this will help me meet my deadline next week how?
Its not apples responsibility if i suffer data loss.
And its not apples fault our uni computers dont allow you to do the recommended safely remove hardware before physically removing our usb storage devices.

Got some luck out of easy recover pro, pc died part way through the restoration but iv got a lot of files back. The alll important ones are dark basic though, so i cant open them on this pc. Its not saved them with the right file extension but im confident that theyr the .doc files that are over 1gb big :p

theres still a chance it wont work tho man :( im just thinking, 1gb is a bit big for a file =/ lol hopefully its sumwwer in ere tho:p

The whole not writing over files if you want to recover lost data will work fine for drives based on magnetic storage (HDD's et al), but will mean relatively little for flash based storage (USB sticks, iPod Nano's etc).

With it being flash based storage, the probable reasons that the data is no longer accessible include:

1) power surge has wiped the chip(s)
2) chip(s) has died
3) FAT has become corrupt (unlikely, but this is the ONLY scenario where your data will still exist on some level)

Really you need to see if the drive has a File Allocation Table, or at least one that is relevant to the data on the drive.

Data Revocery Wizard can recover from USB disks, but you have to pay for it, although the demo should show you if the files are recoverable or not.

i used easy recover pro as recommended, it did actually recover a fair bit but due to it not being programmed with hexidecimal codes etc for a certain file extension it hasnt properly restored those files, theres rather large .doc files present etc.
Im just wondering are there any programs that can restore any file extension that it can find, or if theres any sites with listings for details such as all the ones i need to manually enter into easy recover pro for it to restore my dark basic files.
