Ive had enough searching :( Looked everywhere, what solutions are there for me? I am electrically competant so am willing to mod existing wiring. Just need to create an aux input on my comand system.

Anyone done this or have any idea's short of an itrip? :(

Car is a last gen S430.

I have to say itrips are not that bad. I spent a bit more money on quite a posh one last year for the missus and the sound quality is pretty good. Much better than those cassetes you used to plug in that had a minijack lead that went into your cd player. Obviously a system that tags onto the cd changer input should be vastly superior in quality however, i must admit.

I've heard those densions are good, looking to get one for my e39 and actually buy an ipod to go with it (have a zen at the mo)

Issue i have with the "proper" control systems is that they are £300 or there abouts. I dont keep cars long enough to justify spending money on them :(

Its looking more and more like the itrip unless i can find a guide to somehow mod an aux in on it somewhere!

Does it have a CD changer?

If it does, then there is definitely a way to mod it, as sound from the CD changer must come in L&R form, just like an AUX in. The problem lies in triggering the CD changer mode in the HU everytime you plug in your ipod. You could do this by leaving everything but the line out connected to the CD changer, and whenever you want to use your ipod, just press play on the CD changer, thus changing the pre-amp setting to the CD changer setting and then you can play your audio from the ipod through the speakers.

Of course, the above is just theory, but I cant see why it wouldn't work. Go onto talkaudio, a lot of people have modded their CD changer inputs to work as AUX ins I believe.

The issue with using the cd changer is that the s-class uses a fibre optic wiring loom. The changer is fibre as are the interfaces available :(

Well that blows my idea right out of the water!!

Did mercedes offer an Aux-in/USB interface as an option when new? I seriously doubt it but you know what merc are like...

This is it, i cant find out :( I doubt USB as its a 1999 car, but they could well have offered an AV input.

Oh god - please don't do it.

Me and PeterNem both have Dension Gateway 100's and they're absolutely awful - they forget the iPod's there all the time and stop charging it, and they randomly reset and the head unit returns to FM. Mine usually does it at least a few times a journey. Complete pile of junk!

Until they sort the issues out, don't bother - do you have nav or the head unit with the big screen and lots of soft buttons?

That's not good.... I was just looking at the simple Icelink, not the gateway, do you know if there is any difference?

This is my HU: High OBC.

What's a better unit?

If you have that HU you can get an Intravee which is a much better option.

The Icelinks have been discontinued - I ordered an Icelink Plus but got the Gateway 100 because that's what replaced it.

Whats this about having to join a development program to get it though, is that not a bit odd?

Jez, I've looked into this and could only find very expensive solutions from 3rd parties to integrate into the COMMAND system. I ended up with an iTrip equivalent and am more than happy as a compromise.

I have the same problem with my Golf, it's a company car so didn't want to spend loads.

Ended up with one of these:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Full-channe...4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1189770868&sr=8-1

Sits nicely in the cup holder & charges the ipod etc whilst using.

I was not expecting much tbh. But it is actually pretty good, good sound quality & does what it says on the tin so to speak.

Edited to add a review I used for the FM Transmitters.

The joke is that i cant even use a tape adapter thing (got one sitting here) because the tape slot is motorised and cant close with the tape adapter in there :p Guess i will get an itrip then.

just get a good quality itrip no a nasty cheapo one. I got this one for the GF http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/re...al-fm-transmitter-auto-charger-for-ipod-ipod/ and it works well. I am fussy about audio as it is part of my work.

"Overall, Kensington’s Digital FM Transmitter/Auto Charger for iPod is a car accessory that’s definitely worth shopping around for. Those familiar with older FM transmitters will appreciate its dynamic sound and clarity, and first-time users may wonder what all the fuss over “staticy FM reception” used to be about. Kensington actually delivers on its promise of premium sound, which is great so as long as you’re willing to pay for it, and don’t need to carry it around everywhere you go. "
