I want an mp3 before i go skiing this february. I'm probs going to get the nano beacuse all my music is on Itunes, its slim, and PSS so the hdd wont break at the low temps and high altitudes?? am I right in saying that.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MP-030-AP

overclockers seems to have the best price, but the picture shown is the old gen, but the discription matches the new 8gb model which is the one I want..

thanks

The product title states 2nd generation which is the latest version of the Nano.

it will probably break, get a creative zen v plus 4gb or 8gb, your preference, 10 x the durability of the nano. the zen plays video also, but i doubt youll need that on the slopes!! :D

well unless music bridge has had an update and starts to work then all my music is staying in itunes.
I'm not looking for a creative vs apple comparrison I'm wondering the video vs nano.
any oppinions on the latter would be very much appreciated

thanks

both the nano and the video have a minimum operating temperature of 0 degrees C, I'm pretty sure that its going to be colder than that skiing.
I wouldn't of think minimum operating temperature mattered when its the PSS of a nano? :s

thanks

I've used the nano for snowboarding for a couple of years, some of the temps i've boarded in have been down to -45 celcius with wind chill and i've never had a problem. Remember the nano is inside your clothing so it's ok.
When i first used it i wondered if the battery would last as long because of the conditions but it lasts all day.

Just buy the nano it's great for the job!!!

Creative players also have 10x the ugly-ness on the players and the interface of the player.

On the 30GB Zen they have so blatantly copied the iPod in a few ways it's terrible, however it feels a lot more clumsy and is a lot uglier than the iPods interface/player.

My friend has this one;

vision02.jpg

To quote him;
This is my 30GB MP3/MP4 player and its <sweary> amazing a lot better then a ipod video

Makes me laugh tbh, I've used his player and it's worse than an iPod in pretty much every way, it's so THICK also, the looks of the thing are disgusting and the interface is appalling.

I got my 30gb iPod for 250 USD (126 Quid) from BestBuy in Florida, absolute bargain, would've paid the full UK price for one if needed they are so lush and just perfect, would rather pay 100 quid more for the iPod over the Creative. (The price different isn't that big, but I'm just saying how much I dislike the Creative players)

Anyway, time to end this slightly off topic post

I have to doubt that, considering the Nano is basically just a chunk of aluminium with a screen on it.

I've never really been an iPod fan, but got a Mini at the end of 2005 quite cheaply. Was only when they released the 2nd Gen Nano that I became interested in the iPods again. Got an 8GB for Xmas and I've been very happy with it. Only criticism is that the software is somewhat less responsive and stable than the Mini's was, which is disappointing.

i've had my nano for nearly a year now, and its still going strong...

i'm a mountainbiker...

i did 2 weeks in the alps with it still mint working....

The casing on it did take some massive abuse - got 3 big dents, but the ipod still works perfect

i went through 4 ipod videos in as many months.... so i went to the nano as its PSS and never droped a beat and the iTunes software is the best imo...

If Collisster's still following the thread with regards to using the nano for skiing I forgot to mention one problem I had as follows.
The first music player I used was a sony cd walkman and this came with an inline remote (on the phones cable) and it was great because I could loop this outside my jacket. Comes in great if you need to pause or skip tracks etc without having to open your jacket in sub zero conditions.
Trouble is when I bought my nano there wasn't an inline remote available.
I got sorted in the end though because I bought a burton hi-fi helmet which has a mute button on the side and it works great, the earphones sound good and because they are built into the helmet they don't keep falling out like when the wind catches the standard ipod plugs.

If you don't use a helmet i'd recommend one - don't do what I did and buy after you've had an accident ( knocked myself out and shattered my wrist and forearm in half a dozen places ).

the zen isnt 10x uglier than the nano, but then again if you want to follow the masses and get a worse product thats up to you.

in every one of my classes at college about 5 people at least in each have an ipod, be it nano or otherwise.

in my physics one guys screen is cracked on his nano, after only a few months of use.
in my maths one guys 30gb ipod crashed once, never to be seen again.
and a few of my mates i hang around with got ipods, and they all have sleaves for it, every one of them, now what does that tell you about the built quality if you cant use it without a sleave. do you see creative zen sleaves?

edit: and zen has better battery life and sound, its better in almost every way imo

edit: and itunes is crap

edit: and zen v plus 4gb has fm tuner, video and voice recorder, yet is still cheaper than the nano.

I'm sure they're available. I don't have a sleeve for my iPod Nano, nor did I have one for my Mini. Never needed one. Do bear in mind that this topic is about the current generation of Nanos; most of your points are null and void here.

Of all the people I know with iPods, none of them have had problems. Although it's not a particularly huge number of people that have them anyway.

The Nano does up to 24 hours (proven in reviews); the Zen Plus does 15 hours. The Nano is also far thinner, has a superior display, and to me at least, appears far more durable (as I said before, it's aluminium).

iTunes is crap, yes. Don't use it then - Winamp with the ml_ipod plugin is fantastic, and it handles album artwork.

I'm not an Apple fan and as I said before, I've never been much of an iPod fan either. But as far as the Nano is concerned, there's nothing better available at the moment. The only player that comes close is the Sansa, and it just doesn't seem to match the Nano. Looked at getting one, but the Nano won me over.

The Zen that's equivalent to the iPod Video doesn't have better battery life, it's about the same even my friend told me that. (If you was on about the Zen Video whatever it's called)

iPods everytime when it comes to MP3 players, paired with some Shure e2c's it's unbeatable.

I (or my ears) prefer Sony £40 earbuds from a comfort (mainly) and sound point of view but the e2c's certainly aint bad

One thing I wanted to ask is that I am now contemplating an 8Gb Nano also (love the red version) is these number of songs usually listed on the capacity - I am guessing this is just for novice/ non-technical users at an average of 4mb per song rather than a hardware limitation of the database size?

my comments on ipods breaking were all current models. im sorry but i think the ipod nano is not superior to the sen v plus.

Yep, they just give those numbers as a rough guide.

For what it's worth, my 8GB Nano says I have 484 songs on it, 7.4GB capacity (always lose a little bit, after all), and 3.6GB available. A lot of my music is longer than your average song though.
