thinking of getting one and a speaker dock for my house. is it worth it or would i be best getting a nano or touch?

Well you can't dock a shuffle as it doesn't have a 30pin connector port. The new shuffle is great for a clip and go device for the gym, shopping or the beach etc. But as a repository to store your music for home use, go for something with a screen and a larger capacity imo.
The touch would be the best recommendation if you don't already have an iPhone.
