I've purchased the iPod Touch 5th Gen today and wanted to know if I can purchase a wall charger and plug it in using USB to charge my iPod?

Yes, you can. You can grab a Gear4 charger cheap, don't bother with the Apple one, too expensive.

if you're going to buy one, get a ipad charger. It will charge much quicker than regular iphone charger. ipad charger can charger any idevice.
