I'm going to be selfish and start my own topic as I can't quite find what I'm after using a search.

I gather Handbrake is good for converting DVD's however its really, really slow. Over 1 hour to do 1% of a DVD is just too slow. Am I doing something stupid or is that just how it is?

Also for converting AVI files etc what would people recommend in terms of free software?

Cheers

Dave

I've always used SUPER converter for video formats. Converts almost anything to anything.

The website is a pain though...

Edit: For mac or windows?

I use handbrake but I've never had to wait 1 hour for 1% of a dvd, something is wrong. What settings are you using (it's best to stick to the presets unless you're feeling confident)? You might want to try ripping the dvd first then convert using handbrake later, less strain on your drive.

If you're still having problems you can try posting on handbrake's support forums. They're usually very helpful but you might have to wait up to 48 hours to get a response. Be sure to post a detailed log of what handbrake is doing.

As for avi, I've no idea.

I've always found video convertors really slow, until i started using ones based on my graphics card that is. Ati and Nvidia both do free ones I believe (Ati definitely) this laptop isn't the fastest but I can convert a movie into an ipod friendly format in 6 minutes or so versus about 45-1hr using super c.
