I am just about to order a monitor for my PC gaming, I am considering this one:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-067-AS&groupid=17&catid=949
Asus VX229H 22" Widescreen AH-IPS LED Multimedia Monitor - Black

It's an IPS 21.5 monitor, will this be ok for FPS games? BF4, Wolfenstein, Titanfall etc?

My current monitors resolution is not full HD it's 1440x900 and is easily 5-8 years old, so wanted to update it to get better visuals etc.. Aswell as PC gaming I will also use it for my PS4, but mainly PC.

I have read a few places that IPS will give ghosting, but other sources say not, anyone have experience of playing fast paced. FPS on an IPS monitor?

Thanks.

My dad actually has this exact monitor and it's awesome, I have the 27" version and haven't noticed any ghosting with either, Superb picture and brilliant for gaming :)

5ms GtG is not ideal for first person shooters or games with fast motion.
You will probably notice motion blur on that monitor.

If you are really into ur first person shooters, you should consider a 1ms gaming monitor, ideally 120Hz+ (but colour / image quality will suffer).

IPS = superior image quality (especially colours) at the cost of GtG response time (decides how much motion blur you get).

If you think IPS is fine for FPS, it might feel so if you've never tried a new 144hz TN. If you can't notice the difference in motion and response then your eyes are broke.

That being said not everyone is super competitive and might just prefer playing with better IQ.

It's not really about that, it's as you said at the end of your post, some (myself included) prefer the image quality of IPS over the response of fast TN panels. It's a trade off, and I personally really don't like TN panels, the extreme colour shift alone is enough to put me off them.

I agree. I have a Dell IPS and BenQ TN 120 Hz next to each other but because I class myself as half-decent at FPS games I have to switch to the BenQ for them due to the 120 Hz. But it does pain me when I have to switch as the colours are so much better on my Dell.

I do everything except FPS on my Dell.

@OP: if it was me, unless you're semi-serious about shooter games I would get a good IPS panel which is good for gaming too. It won't be as responsive as a 120 Hz TN panel but it's a good mid point.

Cheers for the responses, I need a smallish monitor due to my gaming area space! Have a 19inch at the moment, can't go to anything over 22inch as it would be too big!

The monitor I have currently is 5ms response time and a lesser resolution 1440x900 and is 70hz, so I am not used to 120hz etc and on a budget.

I am fairly serious about FPS, as in it's my main game type I play, but I wouldn't say I am anything special, I have also recently been playing on a Sony syncmaster tv which has an awful resolution of 1360 x 768, so I am hoping the step up in quality will show and I won't notice any slight issues with blur etc as the picture should be so much better than I am used to anyway!

I was able to get the monitor for £120, so not a bad price.

Update:
Well in the end I got the monitor:

I had a think and although I play a lot of FPS, I am nowhere near a pro! I consider getting a K/D ratio of 1.xx as good enough, as I shot more people than shot me, and that's the overall score I get in most games I play, so am far from being pr0! But I enjoy the games!

I have used the monitor for a few days now on cod, titanfall, Wolfenstein and watchdogs and I don't personally notice any issues with the blur or ghosting. This could be because of the monitors I have had in the past, but regardless I am happy and the picture quality is great. Makes all my games look really good with my 7970.

I have also tried fifa on my PS4 and that is really crisp aswell.

Thanks for all the advice...

Those on a budget I would recommend this monitor!

The BenQ 120+Hz are absolutely terrible color wise IMO - I miss my old Samsung 2233RZ - sure you could see the dithering from it being a 6bit panel if you looked for it but other than that when calibrated properly it had similiar color accuracy to this latest round of 4K TNs and deep gorgeous blacks.

It's the same with my U2312HM. The colours on it are absolutely gorgeous and the blacks are some of the deepest I've seen. I played on a BenQ 2420T a while ago and while it felt noticeably faster, I'd say it wouldn't be worth the swap because of the TN

I couldn't personally go back to 60Hz for any real gaming myself - 120Hz and the clarity in motion of a good gaming TN is currently unmatched and I'm too used to it.

Currently in daily use I have the Dell U2913WM, AOC U2868PQU and BenQ XL2420T and the BenQ makes me wince any time I've been using the other 2 and switch over but theres no way I'd play FPS online on either of the other 2.

I don't find IPS good for gaming tbh. Not when your used to 120/144hz, they feel very slugglish.

Well... I would say it's not good for twitch FPS games. I love my DELL but I love my BENQ even more for BF4.

FPS games - 120/144Hz is a must. It feels so much better and my KD increased

Slower paced games - bigger res is better

Do the TN panels in the latest benq 144hz monitors still suffer from bad colour/gamma shift when you change viewing angle?

I know the colour accuracy has been improving with each new generation of TN panel but not sure about the shift issue.

Will still get gamma shift if your not sitting fairly much dead on (and even then there will be some level of it noticeable top to bottom) - not an issue for mostly gaming use though IMO, recent TNs tend to be fairly generous on horizontal viewing angles but not so much for vertical.

BenQ color accuracy thought IMO is still far from ideal in general, I've got the XL2420T and even alongside this AOC 2868PQU let alone my IPS panels it makes me wince badly.

It's the gamma shift that annoys me most and stops me from using a tn screen.
Maybe if I'm running dual screens then it wouldn't be so bad I.e. only use the tn for gaming and only as a secondary screen for anything else desktop related but that's not exactly ideal.

I may just stick with IPS a while longer (running at 72hz).
