IPS Vs Fast TN : Same smooth level ?

I have a question :

Comparing some IPS models like Dell U2312Hm or Asus PA238Q against a fast classic TN with 1 or 2ms to responsive time or some 3D models but in 60Hz mode, the level of smooth in game is identical in a situation with the same frame rate ? Or playing in the IPS is like to view less frames or a sort of stuttering effect or excessive tearing ?

Hi there,

In terms of smoothness, a 60Hz IPS monitor will be just as smooth as a 60Hz fast TN panel - when driven by the same source.

The big difference between IPS and TN panels for gaming uses is pixel response time. This means that pixels in IPS panels generally take a bit longer to complete the transition from one colour to another, compared to a TN panel. This means that there is a bit more ghosting/trailing when running images with a lot of motion (this increased ghosting does not effect the smoothness of the image and does not cause stuttering/tearing). That said, with modern IPS panels like the E-IPS panel in the U2312HM, this ghosting is a lot less of an issue than it once was (this review compares the real-world ghosting of the U2312HM to a wide range of modern monitors).

If you are really striving for smoothness then I would suggest looking for a 120Hz TN panel monitor like the Samsung S23A750. Due to the high 120Hz refresh rate, fast motion does feel a lot smoother than a standard 60Hz TN or IPS monitor. Plus, the panels these 120Hz monitors use are optimised for fast pixel transitions, so response times and ghosting will be as low as you will find on a LCD monitor.

Yes but have you compared some ips models against Tn ?
Do you speak for experience ?

TFTCentral is a noob review because it write the Gaming comment looking PixperAn benchmark than is totally useless and not comparable to the reality.

Calling the tftcentral review a 'noob review' because it uses a good reproducible way of measuring the input lag is uncalled for imo. It along with prad.de seem to be the only sites that provide enough information and comparison material to form an opinion of your own. (Haven't read pcmonitors.org much yet, sorry PCM2.. only skipped through your reviews so far, they seem to be very good as well!)

I've a Samsung 2443bw (generally regarded as the gaming screen to get if you're after 1920x1200 monitor) as well as a Samsung 206bw, both use a fast tn-panel. I've played Unreal Tournament 3 on both them as well as on a Hazro HZ27WD (27" IPS) and it's just as smooth/responsive to me. If you want to game on an IPS the Dell u2312hm/u2412m are usually the recommended monitors, see for example the Best Buy Guide of a big dutch site. It even recommends those Dells for the gaming system.

the input lag is a thing, resposnive, ghosting and overdrive trailing are other.

Using a ridicolous test like pixperan to compared responsive is useless, it use a primitive scene, whit too few colors and shades, it is not sufficient i think.
Prad.de try some games, but pcmonitors try and describes the entire game session whit battlefield and dirt.

I use a U2410 (6ms) at work and in comparison to my Samsung P2450H (2ms) there is some input lag/ghosting, but you do have to focus on it notice.

On the P2450H I would compare it to my old CRT, the first LCD that I've had where I haven't noticed any lag/ghosting.

Obviously the colours on the U2410 are better, but the new TN panels are pretty reasonable and fine for gaming IMO.

sasahara excuse me, but comparing your Dell and P2450H, Can you notice less smootness in games whit Dell like to perceive less frame rate ?

Dell have most ghostin / trailing OK, but this artifacts compromize the smoothness or it's only a distractions ?

For Example, if you play to MW3 in P2450H and after in U2410, whit same identical frame frate and same situation, the game will be much smoother in Samsung or not ?

I went from a 24" TN Benq to a 27" IPS Hazro and haven't noticed any ghosting, lag or anything else. 60fps on one is the same as 60fps on the other (except it looks massively better on the hazro).

Can't say I notice any difference in smoothness, as it's work PC I'm kinda limited with testing, but HL2 seemed just as smooth on the Dell.
Work PC Spec i7 920 & 8800 GTX.

The ghosting is just barely visable you do have to try to focus on it to notice. I would say for most people it's not gonna be an issue.

I have a 22" CRT next to it to compare as well. :D Lag is there but again it's very slight 1 frame I guess and pretty much all LCDs are gonna have lag compared to a crt.

I use a samsung 2443bw and an hp zr24w in a dual monitor configuration. I play a fair amount of fps games and I can tell you the difference in smoothness is negligible between the two. Just like what the other guys said earlier, just go with 120Hz monitor if you don't need 24". The difference between 120Hz and 60Hz is night and day in comparison to TN vs IPS @ 60Hz.
