IPS vs TN for gaming

So IPS has better image quality, however I see that many of them have response times in the range of 5/7 ms.

Does anyone have an IPS panel? If so how do they perform in fast paced games such as first person shooters, compared to TN panels and their response times of 2MS.

Is the difference noticable? Could using an IPS monitor cost you kills and affect your overall gaming performance?

Yes, they are less responsive that TN panel monitors.

However, in fast paced games most people simply can't tell the difference. I use a S-PVA panel (with a response time worse than many modern IPS screens) and I play fast-paced games with no problems all while enjoying the lovely image quality.

However, if you are playing competitively then one thing to look out for is high input lag, which some non-TN monitors with clever image scaling systems often exhibit. These figures are not quoted in manufacturers specs and can only be foung in in-depth reviews.

Don't confuse response time with input lag. It's input lag which is the delay between performing an action and it displaying on screen (assuming infinite framerate). Response time is just related to ghosting.

It's true that many IPS panels have a higher input lag than most TN panels, but not all. Read some reviews to find out the input lag of various panels.

Having owned both, and having played a whole load of "twitch" FPS type games, IPS is the way to go. The difference in quality, and particularly in vertical viewing angles, is just night and day.

+1 to the above. Apologies if I didn't clarify that response time and input lag are two very different things.

To the OP, I would suggest having a look at this site - it really is well done and should provide all the info you need about monitors. This page is a great place to start out.

Do any retail stores have IPS monitors on display? I really want to see if the image quality is as good as people say it is.

Well i have one friend who has a TNT monitor and one with a DELL 2311H IPS Monitor ,and hand on heart the IPS monitor is a better quality picture ,and never noticed any problems on gameing , anything under 10ms response time is fine on todays games ..;)

Theres 2 issues for gaming - input latency and residual image (where parts of previous frames still haven't decayed enough that they don't make textures, etc. slightly smeary on fast moves).

99% of IPS panels are fine for gaming if you just play MMOs, RTS, etc. but you really need to do your research if your anything more than a very casual player of twitch shooters, etc. Also its one of those things that some people are more sensitive to than others - personally I hate it even a good TN panel isn't acceptable let alone most IPS panels... tho I'm quite happy with my 2233RZ 120Hz panel :D

Your best bet is to compare a standard PC monitor in a store to a 27in iMac screen (they are usually about). The iMac uses a 27in 2560x1440 H-IPS panel, the exact same one that is used in the Dell U2711, the only differences are that the Apple uses an LED backlight and is covered by a glass panel.

This panel is of comparable quality to the Dell U2410 and slightly better than the E-IPS panels used in the HP ZR24W and the Dell U2311H and U2211H.

So the result of this is the IPS is a better quality panel over the TNT unless your a avid gamer ,but still hardly notice ant difference in game play ?

I went from a Samsung 226BW (one of the fastest TN panels out there) to a HP ZR24w which is a newer S-IPS panel ...... and I don't notice much difference to gaming :D. My reference is Counter-Strike: Source which is a fairly fast paced game. The Samsung is now my second monitor :)

I used to have a Dell 2408WFP and that had the worse input latency ever.

i have all 4 a TN H S-PVA H-IPS & S-IPS.

TN is samsung 22"

S-PVA is Samsung 30" STPLUS

H-IPS - HPLP2475w

S-IPS - is my 27inch Imac

The S-IPS & H-IPS simply is far better they look so superior to the others including the 30" which is immense for gaming.

You know one thing ive noticed about the tft section of this forum....

And its for the past 3 years I must have heard PVA/IPS is way above the quality of an TN display, but no ones ever put up screenshots too show the 'Quality' difference !

I don't think Ive seen a comparison either on any website one that shows it visually with screen shots either !

But I noticed something very odd last week I had dual view on my 26inch Philips PVA type LCD TV and also the same display showing on my LG 24" TN PC LCD, ran Starcraft 2 and even during the intro screen I noticed the planets surface was showing ripples and all sorts of planet details, on my LG 24" tn panel it was just a haze/blur and no planet details were showing !

I was shocked too say the least especially since I always noticed my TV lcd is always sharper/clearer and better colors....

I think perhaps the reason why I aint seen a panel comparison is its gonna be tricky/hard to get that detail off a camera pic... perhaps a decent high end camera may get those small details.
