IPS vs TN for gaming

It isn't only what the camera captures that is an issue with picturing monitors. What you see is limited by your own monitor, so there is frankly no alternative to seeing the differences first hand. If you would like a good feel of the differences check out the pa241w review on my website. It is written very much from a gaming and movies perspective. Link to my website is in my signature.

Yea, my flatmate had a Dell 2209WA (E-IPS) sitting next to a TN monitor of the same size and resolution. One time he took a photo of the two monitors displaying the same picture of a very colourful rubix cube because the quality difference was so absurd to the naked eye. Unfortunately, when you look at that photo on a TN monitor they look pretty much the same.

For gaming I use my 20" 20wgx2 IPS display, I also use a Dell 2007WFP IPS
Both panels are great for colour reproduction on the standard RGB colour space.

You can find a few reviews at TFT central at http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/nec_20wgx2.htm

The bigger IPS pannels tend to have higher input latency, so I have stayed at 20" panels for the last 3-4 years but now there are some bigger IPS panels out there which have less than 30ms input lag so they should be ok for gaming.

The HP2475W looks great

and I'm tempted to buy the Dell U2311H, review here,

We should start to see LED backlit IPS panels soon, they should be very thin, brighter and consume less power.

I want one!

I too have the NEC 20WGX2 and it is a pleasure to use. Some folks don't like the glossy finish but in my environment it's fine, depends if you have a window behind you I guess.

As smogsy I have the HP LP2475W and its immense, had TN before as do most my mates and you can definitely tell the difference in colour quality/depth and sharpness
and as pcm2 said above you cant post comparison pics cos you would only be able to see what your monitor allows not what the original monitor was displaying

Yeah that's why I guess we don't see any pics and direct comparisons, its all review/chat/talk, I think if TFT Central or other lesser review sites somehow managed to show visually the difference I think people would be in utter shock.

I'm still till this day shocked and the irony is I had not even clicked on the play button in starcraft 2, but if the planets details were that sharp/clear and detailed id love too see how it plays on a high end panel.

It still makes me wanna just take this 24inch LG TN panel and dispose of it in the bin, like ive been playing games and using a low quality blurry panel for past 3 years ;)

Been waiting for this forever, id imagine a LED backlit IPS panel can be nothing short of amazing visuals.....

Considering its what you stare at 99% of the time I think it warrants even spending £300-500 on, but shame Hazro or others haven't got to the market yet with one.

You know one thing ive noticed about the tft section of this forum....

And its for the past 3 years I must have heard PVA/IPS is way above the quality of an TN display, but no ones ever put up screenshots too show the 'Quality' difference !

I don't think Ive seen a comparison either on any website one that shows it visually with screen shots either !

LOL

I dont really understand people who spend £500 on the latest gfx card every year then play it through a £200 monitor????

It's all about price vs performance, 250 is plenty of money for a great gpu, as it is for a great, and massive monitor.

If money were no object then I would spend 500 on each, but you are talking about rapidly diminishing returns on both counts.

For arguments sake, an ips is twice the price of the equivalent tn panel, its simply not worth the size/price/performance ratio.

imo it is, a monitor is often kept for many years and can be re-used build to build, the difference in quality is amazing
I agree on the gfx card front, I try not to buy latest top range card as it does tend to be as you say case of diminishing returns, but my point is some people do buy top end cards and use them on low-mid end monitors

Just got my apple cinema display 24" connected via a female displayport->displayport adapter to a 4870.

It's on another level to the benq 2420bl that got so much hype on this forum, I'll never buy a tn display again!

Was worth every penny of the £538.

Once you've used an IPS screen for any length of time, this opinion will evaporate, believe me!

Depends what your comparing it too... certainly if your using an older/cheaper painfully 6bit TN panel... I have a true 8bit TN and a samsung 2233rz (which calibrates rather well - very nice blacks tho the dithering is sometimes noticeable) and I've never been blown away when putting something like a dell ultrasharp up side by side.

Why don't you get yourself an Apple LED Cinema Display?

I might just do that :D, but I havn't seen a review yet, me goes and looks for one.

Looks like Apple are the only peeps doing IPS LED backlit?

P.S I dont think the picture quality is any sharper on a an IPS compare to TN and other technologies, it just stays true to its colour when looked at from all angles.

This is important for me, I bought a Dell 2405 FPW once and imediately sold it to my father when I saw it from an angle, the colours just looked washed out, since then Ive stuck with IPS panels. However TN panels really have got a lot better with thier viewing angles in the past few years, its just when you look up at one from below they look washed out.

I saw the LED TN panel used in the new mackbook pro 15" the other day,(1680 x 1050) because you cant tilt the screen back far enough you will never/rarely see the angle TN is weaker at showing, the LED backlight was brighter than both my IPS CCFL backlit panels and the colour reproduction was just as good. It was by the far the best panel I have ever seen in a laptop, to date.

Maybe not so noticeable on a 15inch screen, but even from directly infront the colours on a Twisted Nematic shift depending on the position on screen. The Lagom tests highlight this fantastically and it usually surprises many people.
