IRA vs Taliban

Taliban have actually managed to control areas of pakistan and afghanistan. When was the last time the ira ruled parts of ireland?
 
Huge disparity of scale between the IRA and Taliban.

Taliban: 7,000 to 11,000 (2008 est.)
IRA: 900 to 1,200 (1971 est.)

71' was when the IRA was at its peak other estimates in the 90's are around 500 and today it would be far less.

Considering the size difference, Taliban would win easily.
If the IRA consisted of 11,000 soldiers it would be the same size as the Irish Defense Forces!

I could see why the British would be more afraid of the Taliban than the IRA, I would much rather live with the conception of a united Ireland than living under Sharia law. The IRA bomb and shoot their victims, Taliban cut off their opponents heads. Taliban are willing to kill themselves for their cause.

Taliban are more aggressive and determined than the IRA. IRA are better strategists at least against the British.

Were you even born during the 80's? I think the bombing campaign they had in england says otherwise about them being "incompetant". Nothing to fear? Im sure people that were knocking around in the 70's and 80's will tell you otherwise.

Also how many deaths of British troops have there been in NI and Afghanistan?

eidt: 705 troops dead in NI (not including police etc)

126 in Afghanistan so far.
 
I think the IRA would be out there depth against the taliban, mainly as the IRA's main opponents are the british army and loyalist paramilitarys.... (opposed to most armies of the western world for the taliban)

The taliban also had a whole government under its control (good old afghanistan) when the IRA have never gotten into that position (unless you like to belive some of the unionist parties up here who like to claim sinn fein are still the IRA in governement....). Though there is also the good alan partridge jokes on the IRA......

But yeah a few angry northern irish men against some religious extreemists is a bit of a no brainer..... (probably)
 
The IRA is still active in many areas. They still have their funds and fund-raising campaigns in place, extortion, protection etc is another name for it. I suspect they are still training subversives in other theatres of war, would not surprise me if they have worked with the Taliban at their training camps. The ideology might be a little different, but the contacts and supply links would still be valid.
The IRA will never cease to be, it has provided and still provides a good life for a lot of people.
 
Taliban would win hands down.
Ira are nothing more than glorified drug dealers.
they had to use the public and goverment laws as protection, the taliban have survival skills.
 
Taliban hands down. It took a full-on US invasion to knock them off their perch, something the Russians (the second superpower) tried and failed to do. I sympathize with the IRA on many aspects but I don't think they hold a candle to the fearsome radical Islamists.
