Iran captures British Sailors

He is an impressive character isn't he.
I think so. He impresses me anyway. I don't agree with his beliefs, policies, religion or with him provoking the world with his nuclear ambition but he is impressive.
He rules Iran against the backdrop of religious leaders - a peculiar power sharing scenario- successfully. He fiercely stands up for Iran and won't bow his head to uinternational pressure. He pokes, prods and teases the rest of the World with incidents like these - presumeably to test the waters and to keep his popularity high.
He is a very skilled leader. I'd be happy if we had a candidate for the UK PM role with half this mans ability. According to Wiki he is due for re-election in 2009. That is his last term then, I wonder what his successor will be like, could be far worse forthe world.

Possibly ........ depends on your context.

very highly intelligent professors usually don't have a clue what to do in real life situations though... I mean having a MBA and Phd says you are intelligent, but doesn't really tell if you're a clever person or not...

But he is not the man who makes the actual decisions, the Supreme leader does that ;)

Very possibly, we don't know how much authority the President actually has but I think he is influential as well as intelligent.

Isn't the president just a "spokesman" for the Ayatollah and government?

I don't think so, not in this case. I think that because he is very intelligent and very much liked by the Iranians that he is a lot more than a mere puppet for the religious leaders. He's made some fairly radical social reforms (for Iran) and he is curbed by the Ayatollah but not controlled.

Obviously this is merely my impression of the bloke, it is not like I regularly go to the pub with him.

He makes for good TV, I'd grant him that... I don't live in Iran so can't comment on his leadership skills ;):p

They've played this one beautifully haven't they?

They get to say that our personnel entered their waters illegally, that they are within their rights to try them for the crime, but that as a 'gift' they are going to release them. Well played Iran, well played. Couldn't have worked out better for them politically. Beautiful.

Only if you're stupid enough to believe them.

Thanks, I didn't know that. There should be more science and engineering folk in politics generally. I wonder how many engineering or science PhDs are national presidents?

Absolutely. But in the world of political points-winning, Iran came out of this one on top as far as they're concerned.
