...do entitled people even with a visa think that they can cycle through this country looking western and rich with a big bike and not get arrested, banged into jail and charged with espionage.

The countryside may be pretty with nice people but it is a cesspit with corrupt police and a corrupt government and the errant tourists just end up as hostages to fortune in a ****** jail and a hig headache to our consular services, HMG etc. who have recommended not going a country mile near to their borders.

Maybe this should be in travel but why would you?

because they are entitled as you say - ignored advice given to them by locals apparently - felt their little jolly "finding inner peace" or whatever, was more important.

Hopefully the Govt will not spend huge amounts of money trying to get them out.

No doubt some people will have sympathy for them but I struggle to understand why.

I do really find it bizarre with the current political situation why anyone would travel to Iran, you are clearly going to be used as a propaganda tool.

Iran are not our friends that not against Iranian people as I know there decent people there but the government are going to use anyone they can get there hands on.

They think the rest of the world is 'nice' and has similar attitudes to law and justice as we do. Alas, in much of the world the law is completely subservient to those in charge, and if they can use a couple of foolish travellers as bargaining chips in future negotiations they will.

Itchy Boots (Noraly Shoemaker's YouTube channel) recently rode through Iran as a single female motorcyclist and I must admit I was a bit nervous waiting for her next episode. But she was absolutely fine. She's also ridden through India, Africa and more recently Iraq, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

I was genuinely surprised how well she was treated by everyone in Iraq. But Iran did look a bit sketchy.

Maybe it made a difference having a Dutch passport. I'm all for adventure but going there like these two did, with all the warnings against it with British passports smacks of idiocy, naivety or arrogance. Or all three.
They'll have a few years in prison there now to think about their life choices.

they do it because they expect our gov to bail them out.

don't the types of people who do this usually get killed.

Africa seems safer than the middle east bizarrely.

Luck and planning must play a huge part, there was a couple travelling by motorbikes in India which didn't end very well for them. Though part of it looked like their own stupidity/naivety.

I watch a youtuber called backpacker ben who goes to places like Aghanistan, Iraq, Bangladesh ect. Just looked and he has never been to Iran though.. hmm

Baffles me, along with single females travelling to the likes of India. The stories terrify me, people just don't understand how dangerous the world is I suppose.

And everyone who goes there catches horrific diarrhea because of the lack of hygene.

TBH there shouldn't even be any flights to Iran, too risky.
