Iranian Air Disaster

It was an old Russian built Tupolev 154 I think. Because of trade sanctions Iran can't buy safe(r) aircraft for civilian purposes, which I think is disgusting.

Whatever differences the western world has with Iran, it should not deny Iranians the right to safe air travel. Imagine how many sad families there will be in Iran / Armenia tonight.:(

Aye, always thought it a bit weird that, especially with civilian planes. I guess another analogy is the food embargos.

Yep, another good point. I can't understand why they do this because the Iranian people know about the sanctions, put in place mainly by America. With this in mind - how can the Obama administration expect the Iranian people to listen and 'rise up' when they know that their lives are being put at risk.

Very strange logic.

Not the only reason really.

However, the US can't be the sole source of food for any country. If people really believe that then questions of their own government's inability to feed them should be brought up.

However a modern aircraft can easily be modified into something for military use - look at the different variants of the 747 the U.S. and UK use (IIRC they've been modified into the AWACS and Tanker aircraft for starters, not to mention airborn command/control), or slightly older the Comet was the basis of the Nimrod.

That's not to mention the individual parts that could be integrated into existing aircraft or copied.

Ultimately air travel isn't a right, and the refusal to allow potentially military use equipment to be sold to hostile countries does make a lot of sense from a safety (for that countries neighbours) point of view.

Also being used to test energy weapons in the states at the moment iirc?
