So as a part of my time at one of the countries largest IT company’s I got a chance to go to Iraq and do my job for Queen and country.

I was out there for 9 months and it was an experience I'll never forget.

I got an e-mail the other day from a PA of one of the heads of said company’s Defence and Security sector asking me if I wanted to attend a presentation ceremony in June... I'm getting a war medal!!! Wooohooo :D:D:D

Well then you'll know what the situation with rockets and convys in disco's is/was then.

As I understand it everyone that goes out there for more than 6 months is entitled to a medal. It's just a nice feeling that what I did out there didn't go unnoticed.

I know that's the general consensus, and a bottle of the dew would be nice but even I have to realise that going out there has some consequences, I'm not infantry so I'm not as worried as some, but there is going to be a lot of stress. Especially on my gf/fiancee.

Good luck out there chap.

You'll never forget the smell of Iraq I'm telling you ;)

My job wasn't top secret I just did every possible IT job going out there so listing what I did would be a) boring and b) lenthy.

I have lots of different reasons why I went out there, the money helped but it wasn't as good as you'd think.

Its a proper medal :D

I'm not a serving soldier no, never was. I was offered the opportunity via the company I worked for at the time to go out there.

End of the day I didn't ask or expect the medal, I'm happy they have put me up for it and was just wanted to express my happyness.

Why should i give him a break, he was a contractor only there for one reason ££££ i went there for one reason as well, to do the job i love and chose to do, why should he get something that he has not earnt, i have trained for the last 10 years to do my job in hostile places and the medal is the only recognition we receive that’s why it has bugged me, that medal is from our head of state to those that have served her, not those who take the opportunity to make some quick cash. I don’t believe you will get the medal, I have friends in both Afghan and Iraq currently on CP who are civis and they are looking after British Diplomats, getting paid by the Government (not MoD) and they won’t receive anything other than enough cash to purchase a new house every 6 months. Show me any source where any other civi has received it, bar MoD, I can’t find any.

However without you telling me more of your situation i can never find out the facts, ill be interested to see what the medal office has to say, i may give them a ring just to curve my curiosity.

And why have ago "Grunts" its these "Grunts" that kept the other person alive, all soldiers moan about the Job its part of being a soldier, i am in a good job on great pay have a fantastic lifestyle drive 2 brand new cars why would i want to chose something else and a lot of soldiers chose to be infantiers not because they are stupid, far from it, its because they want to serve front line for their country something a lot of people could never comprehend, a lot of infantiers have degrees, most officer infantiers are loaded beyond comprehension as its part of the requirement to be able to support a very expensive lifestyle.

I wasn't a contractor and I didn't only do it for the money, I admit the money helped but it was no where near what the contractors were on. You need to read the thread proper before berating people.

I have in no way asked for this medal and I have every respect for the Armed Forces that are out there doing there job for us.

I really don't see why people have a problem with me getting a medal, I just wanted to share my good news with people. Next time I'll not bother.

Here are some photos of the medal I recieved
