I'm curious how many of you use IRC these days? I had a long break from using it (5 years or so) but I've just set it up again. Nowadays people seem to use Discord which is fine and honestly that is what I used while I wasn't using IRC.

If you do use IRC are there any decent channels out there which are good for chatting? I'm on Libera, OFTC and Freenode at the moment.

I don’t, but I find things from the ‘old internet’ which are still active quite fascinating.

Yep, still on IRC, but then again I'm also on Gopher so I am starting to feel like a complete relic.

On lots of Linux/Unix/Coding channels.

I used to be heavily involved in IRC in the late 90’s early 2000’s. I used mIRC and Pirch98. Would create my own scripts and was part of the movement which regularly hacked the MSN offering when it used Exchnage 5.5 and ultimately moved to MSN Messenger.

Got up to a whole host of no good, met several woman, etc. Ah, youth.

I was more into ICQ back in the 90s. Was fun as hell to me as a teenager :D.

I think it was called Vincula script? That was what allowed you to connect to MSN web browser based chatrooms and then flood it with spam like ASCII swastikas, penises, or whatever else your childish mind thought was hilarious at the time.

I was primarily a Freenode and Rizon user. However I moved to Libera after the great grab of Freenode by Andrew Lee about ten years ago. I use a bouncer but I'm rarely connected to it unless I have to nudge someone to get a software package updated.

Haven't used it in years - was pretty much connected 24x7 to several networks for about 10 years up until approx 2008/2009 - my memory is a little fuzzy now, don't even really recall why I stopped using it. I checked out the state of it around 2021 IIRC and all my old channels were dead or gone except some of the official channels of some companies which had a few users but totally inactive - some of them looked like legacy bouncers no one had turned off.

Someone on here posted a link to a working MSN Messenger a few years ago. Got me right in the nostalgia feels :D

You were in our SAS channel on Mirc iirc. Like you i used for more or less all pc coms. There was a great cod4 MW promod pickup channel i remember that.

Yeah - used to chat programming with a couple of people in there but forget the names now - think one was Octo or something.

Octomonkey lol. Not seen him for some time but he randomly pops up now and then.

You folks should get back on it imo. Just the same as I realised I’d gone silent on forums for years (mostly as a result of Facebook etc killing many forums), I’ve started putting effort into posting on them again because it’s actually better.

I've been using weechat but I could really do with using an IRC bouncer.

I think for weechat soju is pretty popular - I'm still on irssi because it's what I used back in the day, and I am about as adventurous with tech as a sloth.

This, it's a much slower pace of life - but using a TUI too you don't have any of the things I hate about modern-day chat clients, I got rid of Discord years ago, I recently tried Fluxer but it's pretty much the same they're all awful. IRC and Bulletin Boards are the most fun I have on the internet these days.

Started my internets ‘life’ on IRC via mIRC and channels like #beginner where I was a mod. Also used to develop scripts etc to defend the channel from bots.

My clan #iDentity who played many online games back then had (still have) a group on Quakenet. Good times. I still have my mIRC folder from like 1998 and chat logs!

Nowadays the clan exist on our own Telegram group however. Some of us have known each other since Quake 1 and Diablo!
