IRC

My ICQ number was 1776683, that's imprinted in my brain!
So much stuff I have forgotten. I remember buying Windows ME and then not being able to get it to work. Also there were those RAM expanding programs which were a total scam but I didn't know it at the time.

I used to have a bot on the OcUK IRC chat that would kick and suspend people who swore.

I still use /me in texts and messages to people now, which is a hangover from the IRC days. Made a lot of friends through various chats and am still in touch with some of them today.

/me laughs.

cant remember my number .....

ISDN?? cant hide money!
It actually wasn't that much more expensive relatively speaking, especially when coupled with the 0800 providers... 128k when the 2 lines were bonded seemed like a miracle had occurred when compared to 56k.

Also really helped be become the LPB in Quake2, helped my +hook with railgun ability around the map no end :P

Spent an ungodly amount of time (56k dial up when everything was delivered in 14mb tar files) downloading "stuff" from #3dwarez on undernet to get me through my degree in the very late 90s/early 00s...
Met some cool people as part of that community and had a few nefarious meetups in London. Life was a lot more exciting then!

Yea I remember pings as low as 15 in counterstrike. Don't get that now.

ISDN was uncompressed and needed a dedicated digital line, so the tech kind of died off except for very specific uses. Apparently it's still used for real-time remote audio recordings, since being uncompressed there is no quality loss.
I get 8ms in CS2. Toob fibre.

I was more into ICQ back in the 90s. Was fun as hell to me as a teenager :D.

I almost got kicked off my ISP because I was using both lanes at the same time on an 0800 deal.

Omg, what a throw back and those were definitely the good old days! I remember using NNScript for the main client instead of mIRC:

Quakenet was my place, the fomo for getting Q bot in your channel was unreal! Think you needed like 25 users in the channel to qualify iirc.

Where getting +v etc permissions meant respect.

Used it primarily for gaming, mostly CS (1.0 -> 1.6).

Spent much of the late 90s on efnet.demon.co.uk in #warezstoke and then in xdcc channels.

Fun fact - you could crash the gamespy arcade programs chat room by using IRC bots to flood the IRC channel as the program used IRC embedded into the program.

What client did I use? pIRCh I think it was. I'm on discord these days I must be in a dozen or so channels, thats enough.
I hate discord tbh, it just feels so janky to use and the constant upsells to buy Nitro and all these ****** emoticons type stuff

The only thing imo that has come close to IRC has been Slack for me, just unfortunately with it's quite high pricing a lot of Slack channels have migrated to Discord now which I just have to suffer but would 100% go back to Slack/IRC in a heartbeat.

Yeah Discord and Twitch, etc. annoy me with the constant "noise" - things popping up every few minutes, etc. - all too often it feels like babysitting hyperactive 5 year olds in respect to both the software UI experience and the average user :(

Twitter stole the "hashtag" thing from IRC.

It's still used in some places. The military still use it. It's reliable, low demand and easy to set up in a closed/air gapped system. Unlike a lot of modern alternatives...

If you use it's original name, pound, many hashtags become quite amusing.

Especially the MeToo movement that often started with the #....

IRC ?

what about ICQ ?

I was a late user of ICQ but it was the only IRC that we could get past the firewall in college.

Is it wrong that I miss MSN Messenger though?
