Theoretical proof. A spiritual realm wouldn't obey the laws of physics as we know it, and once the brain dies, all the electrical impulses that made you what you were is gone, so it would be impossible for you to return in another embodiment with the same memories or personality (i.e. a violent poltergeist if you were a criminal in life). What is the exact mechanism for someone returning from the dead? We can explain the mechanism leading to someone's birth.

Theory and reality are two different things. To simply say something can't exist because you don't understand the science behind it is very blinkered. Take the recent discovery of 50% of the missing matter in the universe!
Take how many animals were dismissed as impossible. For hundreds of years the gorilla was believed to be a myth! When the platypus was first seen in the West it was declared fake.
To simply dismiss people who believe in something that hasn't yet (And may well never) been proven as morons is crass and fairly moronic in itself.

Remember when people first said the Earth revolved around the sun? That didn't agree with physics as it was known!
 
Theory is all we can apply to something as non-physical as a spiritual realm. What exactly is inside a black hole? Can you prove it doesn't contain another universe or perhaps a gateway to the heavens? It's more likely just an area where matter is crushed into a very small point and gradually exhausted as radiation that in no way resembles it's original contents but is also not an entire universe or haven for ghosts.

We understand it because scientists explain the exact theories and where possible show working examples of their claims. I would suggest that most "evidence" of life beyond death is anecdotal or easily dismissed, which is why it is not generally accepted to be true.
 
According to this (October 2011) "How Many People Have Ever Lived On Earth? 108 Billion" (I know, no way we could ever know how many...).

So, where are all the ghosts? Some folk claim to have seen ghosts of animals & they'd waaaay out number humanoids. Where are all of their ghosts?

I've highlighted a key point there. So much of what we know - as in you and I - we simply have to take for granted. Do you know for certain for example that there aren't creatures living on the moon? Or on Mars? No. We have to go off the very limited testimony of those that have been to the moon, or those that have analysed results from Mars.

Can you give me proof there isn't life on the moon or Mars? I bet you can't. What you would do though are refer to papers and interviews by those that have been there. Well...equally people claim to have seen ghosts. Many more in fact that have been to the moon. So is their evidence worth less? If so, why? Simply because it's about something you don't believe?

Ants outnumber humans. How many can you see now? I bet you can't see any.

Assuming ghosts exist there may be a very particular set of circumstances that allow one to be created, or seen. Nobody knows.
