Iriver H10 owners.

My friend has the 20gb and we compared it to my 5gb... and it looks like a bit of a brick to be honest. It also has no removeable battery. However, it has a bigger screen and 20gb... it's a trade off. (Not so noticeable if you weren't doing a direct comparison) They're both very nice players and it's great to make all the Ipod owners jealous :p

Firmware can be a bit ropey at times... mine's playing up after a bit too much abuse lately, so i think i'll have to flash it soon. Still, no worse than what i hear from the people around me with Ipods.

With a bit of messing around with the battery you can start it up in 'emergency mode' which means it gets recognised as a portable hard drive instead of a media player. On acess restricted machines (work,school/uni) this can sometimes be the only way to acess it, and the music is in a hidden folder so if you don't have privilidges you can't get at it. Still, having 4.5gb odd of file space in your pocket is handy, especially for some sneaky Soldat/Quake 2 LAN games :p (don't know if this works on the 20gb model though)

The included case is decent, though it doesn't protect the screen and the Sennheiser headphones are supposedly a bit weak, but I can't tell.

Don't regret buying mine though, great bit of kit.

Got the 5GB and swear by it. I connect it in 'emegency mode' which ideally makes it a removable hard drive so you can drag and drop your music. Or you can used windows media player 10 to sync it up and transfer that way.

The sound quality is excellent and the battery life pretty decent, i usually get about 8-10 hours depending on how often im going through the menus and how loud i use the player etc. I have had the quoted 12 hours, but it meant the player on low volume and not being touched at all.

The menu is very simple to use, and the touch pad is usually pretty smooth as long as you dont have greasy fingers.

I will quite happily recommend one to you.

Any questions etc, fire away.

Only reason i am thinking of the 20GB model is that I recently put all my cd music collection onto computer (17GB) as I now have a wireless media player downstairs in the lounge connected to my Hi Fi, so no longer need all my cd's available as it plays them all at a touch of a button from the computer upstairs.
But now i want a mp3 player for when i take the dog a walk I will have something to listen to.
I dont like the idea of having to choose what i want to put onto the mp3 player if I was to buy a smaller capacity player, I hate choice lol. So prefer to have everything at my finger tips with a larger capacity. Mind you, a girl at work bought in here Nano yesterday I was surprised at how small it is though, really tiny.

So if you dont start this in emergency mode, you have to use WMP ? I prefer the idea of drag and drop as I dont use WMP apart from playing music on the computer.

I actually feel that 5GB is the "sweet spot" - for me, anyway. Any less and choosing which songs to put on can be tricky, any more and you'll find yourself skipping tracks to find one that you feel like listening to. Whilst I have about 15Gb of tracks on my PC, I think I've finally got the right mix on my H10, coming to about 4Gb - and that's at 320kbps! So in conclusion, bigger isn't ALWAYS better ;)

I've used the UMS/MTP swap trick, so my player is now in drag-and-drop mode permanently, although you do have to run a program called "EasyH10" to update the database everytime you make some changes.

I'm currently using some new Sennheiser CX300 ear-canal earphones, and get a great sound out of the H10, especially in SRS WOW mode.

So from me it's seven thumbs up (out of eight). I would have given the extra thumb if -
A) Database updated itself automatically after drag and drop.
B) Battery life could be slightly better - I get seven hours or so, but that is at 320kbps, SRS WOW on.
C) It doesn't show album art while a song is playing, a feature I would have loved.

Hope that helps :)

just the process of turning the player into a UMS device instead of the normal MTP.

My 5gb pure is now a ums device. all drag and drop for me now. no more starting up in emergency mode, instead it just straight opens the drive up in explorer

is for SRS, keep it off. its crap, and it eats batteries lol. Using the eq instead will get you far better results. SRS on tyhe h10's destroys the midrange and makes the highs extreamly harsh.

Ive got a iriver H10 (5gb) and think its a great little player. Dont mean to hijack this thread but is it easy & safe to update the firmware, and what do i need cheers..

For the 5GB player, follow THIS link and download the updater program by clicking on the little image of the disk. Connect the player in emercency mode (its explained in the program if your unsure) and let the software do its stuff. Itll automatically download and install the latest firmware which is 2.51 at the minute. Once updated youll eb asked to disconnect the player and itll reboot 2 times then your on the new firmware.

Warning, it formats your drive so be prepared to reload your music.

Firmware updates are released by iriver and should be perfectly safe as long as you use iriver firmware.

Ah cheers mate ill give it ago later, the reason i want to update it is because sometimes it turns on by itself and i cant turn it off without unplugging the battery

I've had one for the last six months, and it's brilliant. I prefer it over an iPod, or any other competitor I've had a go on. Easy to use, great sound quality and extra features like the FM tuner and colour screen.

Got a iriver h10 - on Friday for £90 :D
Good old managers clearance offers. :D

Love the thing. Superb.

Shame about the lack of UMS firmware for me to flash it with - but the easyH10 software works beautifully.

Think I'd rate it even above my iriver H140 and - and way above any ipod.
