Complete :D:D

Yesterday I completed the Louisville Ironman competition:
2.4mile Swim - 112mile Bike - 26.2mile Run.

It was a fantastic day but the weather really got to everyone (95 degrees), I have never been in so much pain on the run - it was some kind of slow shuffle just trying not to cramp up lol.

This was my first triathlon or any event for that matter.
Couldn't be more happy right now :D

Took me 14.5hrs in the end. I was aiming for 15hrs so happy I beat my goal. I think with a more favorablewaether day I could or broken 14hrs. The run was what let me down, but I was trying to move forward and not cramp up.

Congrats man - remember you posting about this ages and was wondering if you would manage it or just skulk off! Great work.

Wow you certainly don't do things by halves, out of interest what was your sporting background and what made you decide to jump straight into the deep end and do an Ironman?

Prior to this I was just a very active person. Lots of football and lots of weights - thrown in with anything else that comes my way, boxing, hiking, cycling etc.
I knew I could do a marathon fairly easy, so didn't interest me, I knew I could do a half-ironman if I tried and would not be satisfied until I did the full distance. So figured might as well throw myself in at the deepest end possible and hopefully I'll survive - which I did :D
I did put a lot of training in for a full year and it really paid off, throughout the event I felt physically good (cardio wise).
What's weird is that 2-3 days after I was back playing football and completely recovered.

Well done. As a matter of interest, how would you prepare for an event like this. What was your trainning regime like?

I trained for about a year, but I already had a good base to work with. I tried to hit each event at least every 3-4days. Then followed a 20wk program which consisted of building up my miles and then tapering at the end. In the height of the training, it was an extreme amount of hours per week.

It should be you in 2011 mate ;)
I think you could easily do it. It was such a great day and extremely well organized. The only thing that ruined it was the heat, if it had of been 20degrees cooler it would have been perfect!
haha I did see a lot of those tattoo's, I think I want to try and be a little bit more original that that :D

After following the triathlon thread I was wondering where your update was so decided to checked your profile/stalked you.

Big congratulations from me!

Thinking of entering the 2012 Ironman Bolton having no tri background at all, been a steady runner for the past few years doing lots of 10K and half marathon events and often cycle 100miles a week... I think committing myself to something like this will be a good thing in my life.

Thanks for the insight.

wowa-weeba

14.5 hours of constant swimming, cycling and running

i would be sweating and panting like a dog after 14.5 minutes

give yourself a big pat on the back from me, really well done.

you got any pics? or anything like that or even a map of the route?

Ahh good memories!!
As I didn't do it this year, I went down to support a couple of my friends who were doing it and to see what it was like being a spectator! Made me envious and felt like I was on the wrong side. Both friends completed the event and felt good.
Was surprised to read this that the Louisville (the one I completed) is one of the top 5 hardest Ironman courses :D

If you are considering doing it, don't put it off!! Register yourself a year in advance and get the training wheels in motion! You will LOVE the entire experience (well I say that loosely with rose tinted glasses ;))
Best of luck :)
