Great. I love computers.

Brand new motherboard. Windows setup initialises and instantly blue screens with IRQL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL.

Any ideas? Abit IP35 Pro, 8800GTS, 2Gb OCZ Platinum, Core2Duo E4300.

EVERYTHING is totally stock.

Can't even get into Windows setup now.

Press any key to boot from CD...

I press a key.

Screen goes blank. End of.

And.. im actually getting LAG in the bios. HUH??

I reckon it's your Hiper PSU, Fox.

I mean, it's one of a couple of remaining components from the last build? Maybe it's not supplying enough power to the ATX connector, or the HDD.

Seems it isn't Windows Setup thats crashing at all.

I dont appear to have any USB once I've progressed beyond POST. So of course when I thought I'd hit enter to boot from the setup CD, it was actually thinking I'd pressed nothing and proceeding to boot my old OS with a new motherboard with a different chipset...

Can find no options in the bios relating to USB.

I spoke too soon. Copying files to the installation folders.....

DRIVER_IRQL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL

It's referencing USBPORT.SYS.

i used to get the exact same error although with a different .sys at the end of the error each and every time (including usbport , vga and random others )

turned out to be that one of my sticks of ram was faulty

worth trying with one stick at a time if you can

I currently have no USB devices hooked up at all and Windows Setup has hung up at 'Setup is loading files (Dynamic Volume Support (dmio))'.

I used this very disc to Install Windows without errors on this very machine (Only difference being I had the Gigabyte DS3 installed) only 3 days ago.

Only got one stick of ram as well. Will try just the other.

FFS now the stupid thing wont even POST.

Beeeeeeeep beep beep beep. Very descriptive. This is with just the OTHER stick of ram in. In a different slot! It powers up for half a second then powers down.

Prior to moving to C2D I have NEVER had these sort of problems, ever. My systems have been perfectly stable :(

I have an Enermax Liberty in another machine. Before I rip it apart and put it in here, would doing so allow me to confirm/deny the PSU being at fault?

I obviously dont intend on using the Enermax PSU, which is a 400W supply, for anything other than testing purposes. Or would the fact its only 400W mean its highly like to produce similar issues simply through lack of power?

Yay - setup hung at Starting Windows now. Fantastic.

That really does sound like a dying PSU to me. I had the exact same problems with a PC not long back. One long beep and three short beeps. Which pointed to a bad video adapter. Stuck a different GFX card and it was still the same, so tried a bigger PSU on the brainwave that it wasn't getting enough juice and the IRQL error and black screens never came back.

If it's running barebones a 400W should be fine. It's usually the PSU being faulty giving an unstable/tiny supply that causes problems, not a always too little wattage.

Right. Got the Enermax hooked up now.

First impressions - no USB past the POST screen. ie, it would not respond when I pressed any key to enter setup. With a PS2 keyboard plugged in instead, it was fine (As it was with the Hiper).

USB keyboard works fine in the BIOS.

It's trying to install Windows now.
