The above question might sound rather open ended but I'm thinking of buying one of the western digital passport drives to use for backing up my Macbook Pro's 120gb disk. I am thinking about how the disks lose capacity after formatting etc so would I be right in saying that if my 120gb disk was full, the 120gb passport drive would still be able to fit everything on to disK? I don't think il ever come across that problem but just wanted to check it out as my method of backing up is to backup a complete disk image so i definitely need to ensure that 120gb will be enough. Thanks

Your MacBook's own disk will have the same amount of space used for filestructures etc so there shouldn't be an issue. Most backup programs will create an image which is either compressed or at a minimum only containing the actual data so if you've got 70Gb of files on the macbook the worst case is that the image will be 70Gb.

yeah thats what i was hoping for but i had an idea that once formatted, disks may have slightly different capacities even though they are meant to be the same size. I have a 250gb disk at the moment but its kind of a waste as the most il ever have on it is 120gb max. it could come in a lot handier on the pc.
Thanks
