right guys going to order a lappy tonight from outlet but screen is 1366 x 768 are they really that bad should i wait and get the higher res hd one with anti glare for the extra 65 quid ?

i dont want to have to squint though to read text and stuff

Depends how high a resolution the £65 will get you.

1366x768 isn't that bad for casual use, but I prefer substantially higher.

Eg my old laptop was 1920x1200, and this one is 1366x768 and I find it awful.

Unless it was something I was using as ultra portable I'd want atleast 1680x1050 type resolution these days for a general use laptop.

depends on the size of the screen in my opinion.... on a large screen, higher is better but on something like a 10inch I don't see the issue myself.

Having said that for 65 quid, I'd be getting the anti glare hd one...

its a dell

screen size is 15.6 inch

either 1366x 768 true life
or

1920 x 1080 hd anti glare matte anti reflective

difference in price is for an extra 4 gig of ram and the hd screen is only 40 quid

my concern is that it will be eye straining when surfing the net or reading text cuz the text will be soooooo small

Definitely get the upgrade for that price. 1920x1080 will be fine for 15.6", its 13.3 that can be a bit too small.

You can always up the DPI if you want.

The thing is all the 1366x768 are generally rubbish TN panels, so they're are crap regardless of resolution. Some are diabolically bad, with horrendous contrast and viewing angles, the type of LCD quality you'd see a decade ago.

This.

My current work ThinkPad has a far worse screen than the T42 I got 8+ years ago. Luckily I've got a dock so get to use a proper IPS monitor 90% of the time.

I'd definitely do it for that price - even if you end up running it at a lower resolution or changing the DPI to make it more readable (which you probably won't have to do) the panel quality as mentioned above it likely to be substantially higher.

what about gaming the card in it is a mid range card will the higher res screen make it less effective ?

if i drop the game res down to say a 720p res 1280x 720 will i then get black borders top and bottom ?

cheers guys

The higher resolution will put more strain on the card, the GPUs memory will be an important factor here.

You can drop the resolution. You won't get black borders for any resolution that is 16:9, so 1280x720 will be fine.

a bit late with my tuppence worth here but there is absolutely nowt wrong with 1368*768 in a 15" screen. Most people I know have 40" TV screens at that resolution.

Also, with that low end graphics card, your gaming performance at 1080p is going to suck. You will get about half the frames at 1080p that you would have got at 720p. It will suck that bad that you will be forced to lower the resolution. As soon as you lower the resolution on a LCD screen, image quality really starts to suffer.

If you intend to do a lot of gaming on this laptop, then you have made a bad move. Otherwise, obviously 1080p is much nicer than 720p, albeit totally unnecessary for a 15" screen.

Don’t scare the poor bloke lol I had a Studio XP with a 17” screen and a 1080 res that used a 5650m. The games I played mostly had to be knocked down to 720p but then by using Sweet FX or in game FXAA or some form of AA that wasn’t too costly, it was at times no worse then trying to play the game at native res without AA applied.

It isn’t that bad, laptop screens, the 1080 panels more so have come on a long way since the early days when using anything but native resulted in a very poor display being shown.

I’ve played a lot of games at 720p on a studio XP on a 1080 panel, never once did I feel it was blocky or unplayable. Of cause, once you up to native, you can tell but honestly once you get the game up and running at none native 720 – you soon forget.

And anyhow, some games will run native on that GPU, its not that bad a GPU.

I agree my last 2 laptops have been 15.6 1368*768 and it's not made them terrible to use at all.
I'd have no problem going for that res.
