Is 144hz worth the upgrade?

Personally I only sort of notice it, in that after the upgrade I was like Meh what a waste of 400.. But now 60hz looks shocking! So 60 to 144 seemed like a small upgrade but 144 back to 60 looks like a massive downgrade!

The only problem I have is the high frequency displays are too small. I've been using TVs as displays for about 12 years now, first 32", then 40" and soon 50". This past week I've been using 22" after a move around. It's fine for day-to-day stuff like web browsing but how anyone can game on screens with sizes like 24" or 27" I don't know, it's horrendous. Roll on affordable 120Hz 65" TVs I say. :p

How can you use those size screens on a normal mouse, keyboard and desk setup though? Without sitting at least 3 feet away it would be awful as you'll have to actually tilt your head around constantly, and then you must have either an enormous desk to use mouse and keyboard, or use a controller

In my old age, I don't really find it comfortable to be slumped over a mouse and keyboard so 90% of my gaming is done with an Xbone controller. Lucky for me that I don't engage in any kind of competitive multiplayer games. I'm all for single player gaming. As for the desk, it's fairly small. The TV should just fit on it then I have a second table in front of that one with my m/k on. I'm about four feet away from the TV.

Ah, well, in that case you likely aren't going to be as affected by refresh rate differences as much anyway. I've found the biggest difference to be with the "connected" feeling of high refresh/low input lag, which definitely is more obvious with traditional keyboard and mouse than with a controller.

I have a 120Hz screen, went from 60Hz.

The best way I can compare it is the 30FPS v.s 60FPS. I coudn't go back to a 60Hz screen as 120Hz is buttery smooth, my 2nd screen is a 60Hz Dell and I can compare on the fly.

Yeah, I did think that would be a factor. Playing with a controller probably feels like 30fps anyway. :p

That's kind of an interesting question - when you play PC games with a controller, what's the maximum frame rate that you can probably "feel"? If people playing with a mouse and keyboard can tell the difference between 120fps and 60fps, do controller people not detect any higher than 60fps due to the controller not being as sensitive?

So, I got my new 50" TV yesterday. Bit disappointed with it really. There is definitely much more clarity in the text when running at 4K but I can barely tell the difference between something like 1440p and 2160p when I adjust the resolutions. Maybe 3440x1440 at 144Hz is the perfect set up for PC gaming after all.

I would say so. Having used 1440p for a few years, I was totally underwhelmed by 4k. I couldn't go back to 1080p so 1440p does seem to be the sweet spot, with the added bonus of higher refresh being more easily achievable than at 4k.

I personally think 4k is a waste of resource.

4k is a waste on PC in my opinion, 1440p is indeed the sweet spot for resolutions with IPS high refresh rates etc. It's the best overall.

4k is really only good for a TV.

I like the idea of games which have a resolution scaler. I'm playing Sniper Elite 4 at 3840x2160 but with the scaler at 65% so I'm around 1440p but with the HUD drawn at 4K. It's a nice compromise. More games should have options like this. Hitman 2 does but it starts at 100% and goes to 200% but not below 100% which sort of defeats the purpose.
