Im already on 16mb broadband with sky, and i have just signed up for 50mb broadband with virgin. No im thinking, is it worth all the hassle? Downloads are already pretty quick. plus i know when i phone sky to cancel they will drop my monthly charge. Not sure what to do...?

Only you can tell if it is fast enough for you. It all depends on exactly what you want to use the internet for, how patient you are etc...

How fast is your 16Mb connection running at? I get 12Mb and it's plenty fast enough for anything legal.

Thats irritating, i fail to see why fast Internet and breaking the law are related. There's plenty fo legal reasons people would like fast broadband.

Get as fast as you can get, the only down side is paying for it, 16Mb is pretty quick, but if you use it a fair bit and are impatient pay for a faster connection. :)

Such as?

Most of the things I can think off such as running servers are not encouraged by the ISPs.

Well, keeping my MSDN library up to date is just one of a fair few things that I legally do which I am thankful for 6MB/s download speeds.

I have 16 and im very happy with it ATM, until web technology improves it should be fine.

i was with virgin at one point but i didn't like their small print.

Tbh there is little need for anything over 2-3mb for anything legal!!

Faster speed is not just for download MORE, it can also download what would normaly be download much faster. For example, if I get a 50Mb line, I dont have to download anything illegal to see the benifit of downloading everything I currently do, but 2.5x faster (im on 20Mb). I have 3 internet users in my house, with iPlayer, youtube, watching movie trailers, download games on steam, patches etc... All takes up the bandwidth, and having a faster connection is very usefull when multiple people do all that at the same time.

Just so you know, your sig is too big. You can only have 1 line of text if you use an img, or 4 lines of text without an img, you have 5 lines of text and an img.

Haha, trust someone from Stoke to say that. I guess there is no need for a nice car/a nice house, when you can do everything with a slower/worse one?

I live 20 miles from Stoke, but no-one has heard of the small town I live in.

Stoke is a dump and our house cost over £300k, thanks for the generalisation:rolleyes:

Anything over say 8mb is only required if you download films, games, music like absolute crazy.
I am on 3mb as part of some landline phone deal and aside from last week when I downloaded windows 7 from the MS site, I have not been left waiting for anything.

Generalisation? In fairness, you did just basically say anyone with a fast connection uses it for wrong-doing.

No I said anything over 2-3mb is a bit OTT unless someone is to torrent like there is no tomorrow.

Downloading a huge 1080p film rip would be fantastic on a fast connection, but the rip would be from peer to peer anyway.

Apple TV? iTunes? MS Zune Marketplace? PS3 Video Store?

No personal attacks...

Welcome to 2009, where you can download games legally via Steam that come in 5/6/7/8 GBs sizes.

Or HTTP, FTP or any other protocol you chose to use.

God forbid someone want a connection capable of streaming 1080p content, OMG!

Who are you to dictate what Broadband speeds are necessary for what use?
