Is 2.5" sata interface the same as 3.5" sata interface?

I've got a laptop and I've replaced the HD in it. I don't have a floppy drive on the laptop but I have to install XP and use the sata driver. I can't do that in the laptop so I am wondering whether I can stick it in my desktop and install from there instead...

you shouldnt need sata drivers on a laptop as they run in IDE mode, try going into the bios and changing SATA mode to ide

If you install XP with the drive in your desktop, won't it just not work when you stick it in your laptop again?

Better to slipstream the SATA drivers onto an XP disk using nLite.

So far, the only solution I can come up with is to install with "SATA native mode" to disabled. Once this is done, install the SATA drivers manually through windows and see if I can switch over to SATA

That's unlikely to work. Usually the drivers for native/ahci mode are different from the legacy mode drivers and won't install unless the controller is already in that mode. Of course that's a catch 22 situation because Windows won't boot with the drive in native mode unless the drivers are installed.

I'd just leave it in legacy mode, there's no performance hit in doing so.

I'm gonna try it, its easier than doing a slipstream..

I'll let you know how I get on
