Is 2500K a worthwhile upgrade?

Hi guys,
I'm currently using a Q9550/Abit IP3e-e system and am looking for a little upgrade to go along with going ssd.
The last time I looked at cpus the 2500k was the bees knees for price/performance but obv this is going back, what, 2 years now?
If I was wanting to spend ~£150 on a 2nd hand cpu/mobo upgrade would the 2500k still be the way to go? I know this isn't a great deal to spend but cannot justify spending much more in the near future so if you chaps don't really think its that much of a boost I'll just hold out until I really need to upgrade :)
Oh, and no pointers to the members market please as although I've been around for nearly 8 years my post count is... lacking... :(

thanks all.

edit - 8 years this month it would seem!

I believe I picked it up for around £90, so yes a good price really. I am tempted to upgrade to a 2600k as I'm sure they're selling for not a lot more. I don't need it, but why not? :p

As far as I was concerned, a brand new i5 would set me back ~£170, they don't clock as well and run hotter. The performance increase isn't worth it. I'm not all about having the latest and greatest, as long as it performs well then I'm happy!

if you get an average haswell then its not even a performance increase. i dont see many 4670k faster than my 2550k

Just a quick update...
Just won an auction for a 2500k with a ASUS P8Z7-m plus 8gb 1333 mushkin for £130 delivered.
Pretty happy with that (will be happier if/when it turns up and actually works!!).
Should prob get ~ £50 for my cpu and a bit more for the mobo and ram so should be quite a nice upgrade. :)

thats less than i just just bought my i5 for

just throwing in my 2c I had a temporary and system using a Q6600 also and went up to a 2500k and at the time in BF3 there was quite a noticeable difference in fps / loading times etc

About 2 and a half years ago I went from a Q9550 overclocked to 3.4GHz (under volted) to a 2500k overclocked to 4.4GHz. I found a massive difference between the two and that was before I overclocked the 2500k.

It's a excellent update from a Q9550 and I am still really happy with my 2500k today :D

+1 to the upgrade

I went from a FX6100 to the 2500k and wish I'd done it sooner. Great little chip with loads of overclocking headroom. Currently running at 4.5ghz and I love it!!

Spoke too soon :(
Just had an email saying my paypal payment has been refunded followed by an email basically saying he had been away for a few days and that he could get more £££ than the auction ended with.
A bit miffed tbh. Negative feedback or neutral? I've never left anything but positive before but then have never had this issue :(

Don't give up mate, you'll get something that's for sure. Regarding feedback, that could be tricky. I'd settle with negative, but that's just me!!

It's his decision to put it up for auction (without reserve) and now he's refusing to honor what is basically the terms of using auction because your winning bid "is not high enough for his liking".

By principle he should honor the auction terms and deliver you the items, but since he refunded your money, it's up to you to decide what to do it terms of feedback, or should you get in touch with the bay and seek advice on if you can insisting on getting the items that you have rightfully won and send the money back to the seller instead.

Personally I would just leave a negative feedback clearly stating "Money is refunded due to seller refuse to honour the winning bid" to serve as a warning for other buyers who might consider bidding on anything he has up in auction in the future. Had he gotten in touch with you first and explained this situation and settle with you before hand (with you being understanding and agree to the refund), then it would probably had be fine to leave him a neutral feedback you have agreed to the refund from the seller; but what he has done on this incident is that refunding you money without consulting with you first, he has clearly breached the auction or buying/selling agreement, that alone is enough to deserve a negative feedback. He decided to put things up for auction, he know the score.

Was tempted to persue this and not accept the refund but cba with the potential grief so left some negative feedback instead.

Thanks for the input chaps.

Personally I would definitely leave negative feedback.

The whole feedback system is important because it warns other users against people like him. If I were a buyer and I read that he would pull out if the auction didn't go high enough I would not bid on his items.

-EDIT- Was too quick to post! Glad you did the right thing.
