Is 32GB DDR5 Needed on Intel 12th Gen?

I will have 8+ Google tabs and PUBG and music and background apps and I’m not hitting 16gigs.

The only time I have hit 16+gigs and had PUBG is when there was a memory leak in PUBG.

Lots of games use more RAM than PUBG. Game, discord, dozen tabs, spotify, youtube video on 2nd TV/monitor, soon mounts up.

That said, the main issue is how windows will start using the page file when it starts to get close to RAM capacity. I found this was around the 13, 14GB level when I had 16GB a few years ago.

Its a very opinion based view, same type of people will insist you need a 12900ks to watch youtube and play a bit of minesweeper

i think 16GB is fine for the average user though (I got by with 8GB for quite awhile), but if the PC has semi-workstation usage, or you like high-end gaming (particularly open-world type games, or modded ones) without having to turn off everything, then it is handy. With the price of ram right now relative to the system, 16GB gaming builds with an i5, Ryzen 5 or up definitely make me wince.

I will probably get 16GB DDR4 Ram to start with and see how that goes and if I need more add it later.

I'm sure you can find a few folk who'll say 8GB is plenty, and it will be for their limited tasks.

Time to accept 32GB is the new norm for DDR5 - this is the capcity the vast majority of DRAM manufacturers are using as a default, for obvious reasons.

Just annoying as a lot of people will not need 32GB,, and being forced to spend money on RAM they will never fully utilise.

32GB of DDR5 is not the new norm though, I would speculate less than 0.5% of all STEAM users as an example have that set up.

The only "new norm" is what manufacturers want you to spend £500 on totally uneccearily for little benefit in 95% of cases - that new norm being £500 of DDR5.

My youngest lad has been telling me he occasionally see's the please shut down apps message due to memory, he uses 16, some tabs but some rathar basic yet modded games, his big brother continually tells him to wipe and start afresh with, I honestly though he was just saying it to get more memory, but last couple of weekends I have been playing WoT while using some open tabs on internet, couple of file apps and sorting out multiple folders containing the family photos or sorting through WAV and Video files, I was getting the shut down apps message too with over 10gb in use, think 12gb was the peak. I run 16gb too.

I am contemplating simply adding 16gb to increase this PC 32gb just to tide me over. Might only be occasional weekends, but coupled with waiting for stuff to render in open windows due to so much being on 4tb HDD's I am thinking 32gb with SSD only storage as worth considering just to ease how long I do these tasks, dont get a lot of free time these days and seeing workload hindered by memory usage or HDD speed seems a too often even if only on those occasions.

10 years ago the minimum memory requirement was 4 GB today it is 16GB so the future is 32GB but it is the future.

Today 16GB is more that adequate but if you find the right price for memory, especially DDR4, then upgrading to 32GB would not be unreasonable, and perhaps sensible, given that prices are starting to get more volitile, and probably for the next year or two.
