Hello, i was just looking for some advice. Im planing on getting a new cpu , and my motherboard is locked by oem. so theres no way of unlocking it. unless i flash it, but that could all go wrong and turn my mobo into a expensive frisbee. So is 3ghz enough for gaming , and by how much fps would i gain from the jump from 3ghz to 3.6ghz:)
Thanks.;)
oh yea, is the e8400 good for mainstream gaming?:)

so that will be powerful enough yea.? would you choose to under-clock your cpu to 3ghz. by how much performance did you gain from overlcocking it to 4ghz?

with your gpu you'd see a decent fps boost from 3 to 4GHz, and the e8400 is a beast of a chip, but is going to be eclipsed in the not too distant future (probably be good for a few years) as mulitcore seems to be picking up speed. if you could find a q9450 or can afford a q9550, that would be a lot better.

just a side note, you say your motherboard is locked. am i correct in thinking you cannot change any settings in the bios? if this is the case you won't be able to overclock the cpu...

Oh really thats good!
I cant really afford the quad core, so looks like ill have to go with the e8400 for now.
And yea, your right my mobo , dosen't allow for Overclocking the cpu, which is a massive downer. Nevertheless,im upgrading the cpu for now , and when i have enough cash together, il splash out on a more future-proofed new gaming system:)

Btw side note , are your samsung hard-drives f3s?
if they are how is the read and write speeds?

no the ones in my box are f1's. can't remember off the top of my head but they're pretty good :) doesn't take more than 30 odd seconds to load in the win7, which is good enough for me at the mo

raid is pretty damn good, the only worry is that if any drive in the array die you lose data if in raid 0. raid 1 only gives you back up options should your primary disk fails, but i don't see the point in raid 1 on gaming machines... just get an external and backup onto there every few months if you're really bothered.

i think once SSD's are a bit bigger/cheaper, i'm going to get 3 and raid them :)

just thought i would ask ot, what you are studying at cambridge uni? You must be very clever! I would love to have the opotunity to study there!

My 8400 is overclocked to 3.9ghz and runs great mate. I use the arctic cooling freezer extreme cooler and the antec 1200 case, runs very cool even with the overclock. Good luck

heh i wish; i'm at the lesser-known cambridge based uni; anglia ruskin - it's pretty crusty but i get to do something i enjoy :)

I certainly couldn't feel any large performance difference between my E8400 at stock and at 3.6GHz.

It's a very quick CPU before being overclocked, I wouldn't worry. :)

3GHz on my E6300 gave me slow down in Dragon Age, TF2, L4D1/2 and GTA IV. I moved to quad and now all is well, I would definitely try to push it to 4GHz in the games above as they are all CPU hungry.
