Is 3rd year of uni really harder than second?

I was talking to a guy who is doing the 3rd year of my course which includes doing the dissertation, and he reckons it's easier due to the extra flexibility and you apparently write what you want to talk about, not what has been set like in 1st/2nd year.

I am in the second year and I find it not massively hard if I put the time in and do my work good.

Thanks
Will.

They are both the same at my uni, the modules taken in each year are interchangeable and each year counts for 50% of the degree.

Yup I found that, 3rd and 4th year were easier because I managed to drop most of the modules with the crap lecturers :)

Also I realized where I was going wrong - I stopped trying to understand the material and just focused on learning how to pass exams. I'd draw up an exam map from the last 6 years and link all the related questions and spent more time learning the questions that come up the most. Not what I imagined myself doing at the start of the degree but the results justified it ;)

My 3rd year has leapt in leaps and bounds in difficulty, I did choose a slightly odd choice of modules for my specialisation but even my core Engineering modules are a lot tougher, and working on my 3rd year project in my free time doesn't really do much for the old motivation.

However, my friends who do history, english and [insert generic social degree here] have only a couple of hours of lectures a week, and can then organise thier time around dissertations and reading as they please which works well for some.

I can't really comment much more without knowing what type of degree you are undertaking.

This totally depends on the course and the modules you choose (if you have a choice).

However, you usually progress in difficulty as you further develop your skills and knowledge.

Nope mine was easier.

Probably because i totally slacked in my 2nd year and did pretty bad...and in the 3rd I did a lot more work and got a lot better mark.

I found that there was less flexibility and much harder work and lectures! (I did Physics).

I'd agree with this, (with the fourth year to for me as I did a 4 year MPhys instead of a BSc) ... it is going to depend massively on what course the OP is doing and how that course is structured.

Doing accounting and yes, it's much harder. Partially though the pressure of maintaining your mark from last year makes you put a lot more effort in, wheras in the second year I did virtually no work until the exam period.

Mine was about the same, work was "harder" bt most of it wa built on stuff we had learned in previous years so if you inderstood it from then it was fine. Exam questions were a lot harder though.

I wouldn't say it was any harder in the last year of university really (4th year under the Scottish system) although I guess to an extent it depends how much you enjoy the subjects you've got and how well you get on with your dissertation. It may also vary for you depending on whether you're gunning for a first or if you're happy with one of the lower classifications.

I'm in my fourth year of a theoretical physics degree and yes, it's much, much harder than previous years. The content of the modules is very challenging compared even to the third year stuff and then there's a project to be done as well, which soaks up a lot of time.

My last year at uni wasn't particularly hard, there just seemed to be a lot to do constantly.

This.

It's not difficult, but the time and effort has to be put in. If you're good with time management, then you shouldn't have a problem getting the work done. But if you're not, then you'll be in a pickle.

I'm enjoying it so far, there is a lot of work to do though.
