Is 4k monitor resolution even worth it yet?

I'd love a 4k monitor. I've been wanting one almost since they first appeared but I've stuck to 1440p because I don't think my rig could cope with 4k gaming even though it is pretty high end still. For reference I have:

X79
i7 3930k at 4.4Ghz
Nvidia 980Ti
16GBs of RAM

I'm hoping that the high end Pascal card will deliver playable frame rates at 4k with a single card. I don't normally play many games that have amazing graphics as most of them are a few years old but there is one game coming out in 2017 that I am really hyped about and want the best graphics performance for it I can possibly get and because it is an MMO the 4k resolution will make a big difference to how I play the game because you'll be able to see more.

So when you are you planning on making the jump to 4k monitor resolution? I've kinda given up on SLI as it just seems too flaky and doesn't always work on new titles until they get patched up. I'll be buying a brand new computer when Skylake-E is released so I won't upgrade till then. Do you think that will be able to handle 4k with a new Pascal GPU at the same time?

Nobody knows.

Yet :p

If you plan on getting 4K make sure it has adaptive sync. My 4K Samsung Freesync monitor runs perfectly well on a mix of medium/high/max settings on an single R9 Fury.

At what fps ?

It's fine saying perfectly well...but that's subjective.

Even a Titan x can push 4k at 60fps with medium/high settings.

But no one knows yet. Not until more info at GTC in a couple days time. Even then its unlikely for a 1080Ti, new titan to be released until next year.

Me personally. I still prefer 120/144hz 1440p than 4k at 60. I wont upgrade until i have the power to push 4k at 144hz which will probably be a while yet.

Totally agreed on the subjective part. My Freesync monitor has a variable sync range of 33-60Hz and to me anything between that feels smooth and playable. Obviously the higher the better but if I turn Freesync off even 45 FPS feels worse than 33FPS with it on.

I've been comparing the XB321HK and X34 and for me personally the X34 is edging it. Not only because I'm doing a lot more gaming lately but it's just more of an all-rounder for my purposes (but yes, gaming is MUCH better when gaming on a 100hz panel  )

4K's biggest 'market', as it were, is the film/media industry. Look how little content exists for that market segment.

4K is still slowly creeping in, as far as TVs go I have zero interest in it. I wont suffer poor 1080p upscaling (which 99% of my consumed content is) just to have a 4K panel. You will also have to suffer the upscaling on a gaming monitor when a title launches you simply cannot run at native 4K and have to drop the resolution.

As far as gaming goes - Sure, you can game in 4K. But why? I just don't see the benefit of it over 1440p with the HUGE jump in raw power you need to make it playable.

Give me higher FPS 1440p content over 4K any day of the week.

depands on the game really, some run well at medium/high settings, others not so well, beside why do ppl forget that a 4k monitor can be scaled down to 1440/1080p, so it's always a good thing to have a 4k monitor, even if you dont use it at that rez 100% of the time, @60hz that is, but i think we should see 120hz 4k monitors very soon.

i have the experience & willing to Share if you will listen.
quick spec to understand my setup
i7 5930K
64GB DDR4
2x 980s SLI (reference)

1440p 144hz Gsync monitor - ASUS ROG swift
4K 60hz gsync - ASUS ROG Swift

im a a little Wh*** when it comes to Graphic qaulity

Now before i start, i have switched these monitors backwards and forward between primary positions MANY times (more than 10.)

the 4K swift is absolutely amazing color wised & crisp wise even in older games like BF4.
I find it really shines in games less twitchy like:
American Truck Sim or League of Legends.

The big draw back that keeps making me switch from 4K to 1440p to 4K is the following
on 4K mouse sensitive needs to be increased a lot otherwise it feels laggy/slow
you need to relearn FPS aiming & then at 60hz vs 144hz it feels much less smooth.
it does look much better but in fast paced games you don't really pay attention.
You need much more GPU power.
Games like:
W3 running at 4K requires Medium settings (60fps), which looks worse than 1440P Ultra
Assassins creed syndicate Requires medium settings (60fps) also looks worse than 1440P Ultra.

The Reason i switch from 1440p to 4K is screen estate on the desktop & my 1440P is a TN.
im tempted to buy the new swift IPS too.

If i was to have me huge £800 money back, i would not buy the 27" 4K Swift, i would buy the 1440P 165hz Swift as its an the best all rounder OR i would wait for the 4K 120hz model (but then again you need even more GPU power)

personally only consider 4K if
Buy a Gsync panel
You willing to upgrade Dual GPU+ Often
You play Silly Low GPU requiring games only. Eg American Truck Sim,LoL,Dota2

but even then, i would wait for 120hz+

Personally don't really rate 4K for gaming and it isn't a performance thing.

Some games at 4K were a really good experience hooking up a wheel or controller but when it came to serious gaming i.e. FPS games I never got a setup I was really happy with - amongst other things quite a lot of games I couldn't find a happy medium with input sensitivity between being able to cover large distances quickly and effectively with the extra resolution while retaining precision when making smaller inputs.

The best experience for overall gaming for me personally was 2560x1440 @ 120+Hz.

Personally, I will always take frame rate over res. As a desktop experience though, 4K is sublime.

With the current state of SLI/Crossfire and the possibility that DX12 will only make things worse, the next gen GPU's are going to need some serious horsepower for a single card solution to pull off acceptable framerates at 4K on the next gen games without dropping down to "medium" settings.

SLI Titan X's on 40" 4K monitor here...

Will be skipping the next gen (or even two) of cards I think as my setup runs well enough at ultra settings and looks stunning! Definitely better image quality in games than my 1440p monitor and I haven't used my 1080p monitor for over a year...

4K takes serious graphical power so it needs serious monetary investment unfortunately... :-/

Only games i have fps issues with on 4k are the witcher 3 which i simply cant run at 4k and paragon which needs medium settings. Everything else ive played rund 60fps on high pretty much. Thats with a single 980ti.

I would say it is worth it if you do other stuff besides gaming. In that case I'd purchase one 4K monitor and one cheap overclockable korean 27" monitor. 4K isn't going to be great for gaming until we start seeing single cards pushing 60fps and refresh rates over 100hz.

well ive been using 4k since xmas, and when going back to 1080p it looks rather old (so its definitely an increase in IQ). Although I dont like hearing and seeing my 980ti struggle so much, in 1080p it was pretty quiet. Often it struggles to hit anywhere near 60fps, which is another downside. Hopefully the gpu's can do 4k@60fps easier. Its kind-of atm you can have IQ but lower fps, or higher fps but lower IQ. I know SLI should help, however thats not cheap (not that 4k is) but has its own problems too.

oh for gods sake, 60fps, since when did games need 60fps to be enjoyable. As long as it runs smoothly I don't care what the fps are. If I find a game that struggles to run 4k on my single 980Ti then I can drop to 1440p and it still looks and plays great and I don't have g-sync either.
